Race, Gender, Class, and Media: Studying Mass Communication and Multiculturalism

This was the text used for a class on racism. The authors did a bang up job of tackling the issues of gender, race, and class within the scope of the media, so I cannot complain about the authors' scholarship. Many things I grew up watching are now historical lessons to today's traditional college-age student, but the authors recounted events as I remember them happening.My gripe, which may seem petty in the bigger scheme of things, is the massive amount of grammatical errors contained throughout this text. And it's not just one error every hundred pages. I caught multiple mistakes on one page.Don't book publishers have proofreaders anymore? So many mistakes takes something away from the bigger message the authors are trying to get through via their book. Simply put: It's distracting. That's the only reason why I couldn't give this book five stars.If one can get through that, the authors make numerous good points in this text that it's worthy of putting out a few extra bucks to buy it (vs. renting it). - Donna Di Giacomo.

This book was a requirement for a class I took at a local college. It was profound to say the least, and the additional coursework paired with this book created a complete lesson. The material in the book was relevant to our current media portrayals. I felt they could have potentially spent a bit more time covering Native American and LGBTQ history and representation in the media. Overall, still a great complement to such a profoundly relevant course and it, with this book, really opened my eyes to how truly media illiterate I was. We should all take a course covering Race, Gender, Class and Media!
