Is this fairly quiet or is it noisy? My current machine howls ike a damned soul in torment, which is why it is gathering dust in the cupboard.

Many food processors are pretty loud but this one is fairly quiet. I love this machine because it's not so big or heavy and quiet

how do you operate it

It is very simple to operate and comes with good instructions. The main thing is to be sure that the lid is locked in place. It will only work with the bowl and lid locked securely in place. There are two speeds: chop and grind. Chop is for softer items and grind is for firmer items. You can also use the grind setting if you want to pulse it once or twice in the opposite blade direction.

Has anyone used this to make something like a pie crust, where you would blend flour and butter into a coarse meal, then add water?

The machine is not powerful enough- in fact if you load it over half way with nuts it starts to bog down- I believe you will burn out the motor if you try pie crust.
