Good Book
In the technical support field, we are in need of a lot of reference materials to meet all needs. This book is a great source of information in an area I was not too familiar with.

A difficult but well handled topic
One of the challenges with technology these days, is it's complexity. This applies to all of us, but especially for developers. In an era of mobile applications, ever shrinking budgets, and ever increasing efficiency, the push for cloud is the next revolution. Traditionally we have always thought of SharePoint as an on-premise solution, and Office365 breaks out of that mold, but isn't quite as effective until you add Azure to it. The world desperately seeks guidance on this topic. Guidance, which this book aptly presents.Let me tell you why I specifically like this book,1. It's timing, it is the right set of knowledge when we need it. Thanks to the authors for sharing their knowledge with us on this very very important topic.2. It's coverage, it addresses every single topic concerning modern day cloud ready SharePoint applications. This includes O365 coverage, SharePoint on-premises coverage, and coverage around most aspects of Azure.3. Practicality of the choice of their chapters and examples. I was honestly a bit wary of 3 Microsoft guys writing this book - because they tell the story from the inside, the personality of their books end up being the personality of a whitepaper. This book is not like that. They have choosen to not regurgitate MSDN, but instead show practical examples such as 'creating a training application using SharePoint online', or 'using twitter in SharePoint solutions', or 'Connecting linked in to SharePoint profile data'. Holy Moly - this is what my customers ask me to do all the time, this is the guidance I need .. NOT .. that "SPSite is a SharePoint site" sorta documentation that MSDN is full of (Sorry MSDN).4. Not ignoring security, I love Chapter 11 for this. Though, I wish they had covered OAuth a bit as well, but they did cover Azure ACS, which has OAuth integration.5. It's thickness, I *DISLIKE* overly thick books that are full of paper and no useful material. This book, is not thick! You can actually read it like a story book and enjoy reading it as you go through it.I like this book, I really think you should get on top of cloud ready SharePoint apps (and other cloud ready things).(Review cross posted on my site- [...]

**AVOID THIS BOOK** Poor content + bad style of writing + examples don't work
After reading this book, my most polite response will be "save your money and don't waste your time and energy on this book". But if you really want to know why this thing really stinks continue reading.--> Unnecessary chapter on Microsoft CRM Online (to be fair its really soliciting on authors part), its a SharePoint book and somehow you find "CRM Online" relevant enough to cover as online CRM. Really? what happen to SalesForce.com etc.. should reader will be better off reading that.--> Poor content in chapter 4 "Creating an aggregated Solution Using Cloud Based Data". Again why author choose to cover Yahoo Pipe is beyond me and then even not only that he goes even further and try to drill into advance pipes with Yahoo Query and guess what by the time chapter ends you will be middle of nowhere.--> Poor content in chapter 3 "Building a Windows Azure - Based Service". First author tries to go drill into details of Azure and all the unnecessary stuff goes with it--> Chapter 7 "Using Bing Maps in Your SharePoint Business Solution". Why just Bing?, considering the pages spend on this topic, author can easily manage google maps and yahoo maps or even more (I guess he is consuming this his time beating up the Yahoo pipes :$). But no, for some "reasons" it just Bing and every thing again needs to be sliver light (no JQuery at all!)--> Chapter 10 "Managing Customer Information in SharePoint Online" - Misleading title considering that this chapter is all about Microsoft CRM.--> Chapter 11 "Securing Cloud Solution using Claims based authentication" - Just so you get an idea about how poor the topic coverage is, consider this line in the chapter "It is beyond the scope of this chapter to configure a SharePoint web application to use claims- based authentication.." WHAT?I can go on but I guess you should have idea by now.............So why genuine question arises, why there is no example(s) on utilizing services like Salesforce.com, Amazon cloud services, People Soft integration to SharePoint, Hybrid cloud environments (SharePoint Online + SharePoint on-premise) , SharePoint online dedicated programming, SharePoint online and JQuery based solution, public facing SharePoint Online sites etc... NOTHING is covered at all! Its amazing how authors miss such a great opportunity to cover fantastic area. I guess I got my answer when I read the author's profile!I hope these author don't ever write another book.. ever! have mercy on readers.

Great SharePoint+Cloud book with practical solutions
Like the other reviewers have said, the cloud represents a huge new growth area for SharePoint. Going forward you can see that Office 365 (SharePoint Online) will offer developers tons of new opportunities and new customers coming into the SharePoint platform. This book does a great job of walking the reader through some real world practical solutions they can implement inthe cloud from integrating SharePoint Online with Microsoft CRM and Azure among other things. I really liked the Office 365 and security chapters... the intro to the security chapter has by far the best description of claims based security I've ever seen. Great job guys!

Practical Guide to SharePoint and the Cloud
Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you know that the cloud is the next great frontier in SharePoint development. Understanding how SharePoint integrates with the cloud is another story. Getting a clear vision of the approach, best practices, and benefits is a challenge. That's where this book comes in. This is a practical, hands-on, guide to creating solutions with SharePoint in the cloud. Beyond the basics, the book walks you through real solutions that you can leverage today without a lot of fluff to get in the way. Projects in the book span the major SharePoint workloads so there's bound to be something related to any project you might have on your own development plate. I especially liked the security and Office 365 chapters. Nice job!
