It's the repetitive motion of the metal balls rolling over the knots that brings relief. I use massage oil when using this glove, it helps it to glide better. You could also use lotion; just apply it to your skin first. Worked so well that I've let my family members try it once & they each ended up buying one. - 5 different people. Lastly, it does feel the best when someone else uses it on you because they're able to get all over your back with it and you're able to relax. You can use it by yourself, it's just not as enjoyable on your back.
