Really surprising for the money. Everything was straight and even on the head. good grain on handle. Edge is a bit thick but thinned it down to my needs and it holds a edge quite well so its tempered and treated right.Don't know exactly what carbon steel it is but its definitely carbon of some sort.

Holds an edge very well, used several times without any issues. For size, weight and cost, I'm very happy.

I was looking for an inexpensive camp axe, primarily for splitting kindling and maybe for the occasional small tree cutting chores. The handle on the model I received is straight and the length is good for camp use and the fit between the handle and head seems to be good. The axe head is a nice size and weight with a useable design. Out of the box, the edge is very dull and requires sharpening if you intend to get any decent use with it. The head is a hard steel. A similar camp axe I had many years ago had soft enough steel that I could lock it in a vise and put a nice edge on it with a file. Not so with this axe. I had to use a grinder to get the initial edge profile in place (careful you don't heat the metal and compromise the temper) and then spent at least 20 minutes cleaning up that edge on a course sharpening stone. I'll probably spend some additional time fine tuning the edge. This axe is not designed to be a throwing axe, so if you do use it for that, be prepared for what you get if the head and handle separate. For an axe under $20, it seems to be a good deal. Since I haven't put it through any use yet, I'll give it 4 stars for the overall design and quality of the materials.

I bought this axe in hopes of using it to throw in my NATF leagues however, the head is not secured to the handle very well. It has some sort of epoxy or glue holding it in and after a few throws the head began to loosen so I stopped using it. I certain if used for its intended purpose it may hold up fine but I would not want to go into the woods relying on it. And I would not recommend it for throwing.

Poor quality and broken before I ever took first swing. While grabbing handle, I lifted lower part of cutting to check for looseness and used less than 5 lbs of effort and the handle BROKE immediately, right below the head.... you can see the head has never touched wood.When received, the edge was sharpened lopsided and edge was flat one one end. Top was glued in with epoxy and I could not see if it was wedged at all, as it was 1/4" below edge and covered with black epoxy.Amazon gave full refund immediately.Update 2 days later.... I tried to reuse the handle. I sanded the neck down a little so it would fit in the eye. As I was simply fitting the head, the wood broken in the exact same manner. I was curious so I hit what was left of the shorter handle on a piece of wood and it broke. Upon close inspection and smell, I would swear the wood was "punky", though out the whole handle. There is no way any inspection should have missed that. I suspect the dealer and maker of these hatchets accept this low grade of wood that shouldn't be used even for fire wood...

easy to store on my ATV and seems to be a good value for the money.

It is in good condition would recommend purchasing another handle.
