This is for SATA not for NVME … Amazon has a banner which says frequently returned item, seems like people do not know what they are ordering. I already had NVME based and my old HP 2 in 1 laptop had SATA and was searching for it and it’s hard to find. It work flawlessly and as expected 5 stars for the full elaborated description and pictures for me to find the exact model which I needed.

I've bought a number of these for using NVME and SATA M2 SSDs. I actually shortened some of the cases for using the smaller 2230 SSDs which I thought would be a great flash drive alternative. Plus: 1. Made out of aluminum. Made well. 2. Pretty compact; not much larger than a bare 2280 M2 SSD. 2. Little fuss to install and remove the SSD 3. Activity LED. 4. Compatible with a number of different size SSDs. Cons: 1. Really none at all. This is not compatible with NVME SSDs. There is another version of this case for NVME SSds, however I wouldn't recommend it- or any external case- for an NVME unless you happened to have one of these SSDs laying around. An 860 Evo 1TB in this enclosure (M2 SATA NGFF) stayed at a comfy 39-52C. By comparison, a 1TB 970 Evo Plus NvME ran at 70C in the NvME version of this case. If you're looking to make up an enclosure for an M2, buy a M2 Sata instead and use this case- the speed over USB 3.1 really doesn't justify the NvME version- or the additional heat that comes along with it as all NVMEs run hotter. If you really want NvME , then buy the Sabrent toolless enclosure, as the same aforementioned NVME SSD I use runs about 5-10C cooler in the Sabrent case.

This review is based on 1 day's use. High quality materials, feels solid, works great. I chose this enclosure based on perceived value for the price. I am not disappointed. I had a broken laptop that was going to be junked, but wanted to make use of the internal SSD stick. I bought this enclosure for that and it works fine. Pretty easy to install the 80mm SSD. My only concern is that the clips that would accommodate shorter SSDs press into the back side of the longer SSD, causing it to bow just a little. I didn't want to break those clips off in case I want to use the enclosure for a shorter SSD in the future. The instructions aren't clear on this point, and that's why I deducted a star from my rating. Some users have said the enclosure transfers data slowly or that the enclosure gets hot. I haven't tested the data transfer speed but it seems OK to me. I haven't really put it through its paces, but with light use, heat isn't an issue. I like the blue indicator light that shows it is working. Since the SSD was the boot partition of the laptop, I needed to get rid of all the Windows stuff and just use it as a regular external drive. I was able to access the SSD using the Windows "diskpart" utility, remove all the unnecessary partitions, reassign the one partition I wanted and reformat it. Everything went without a hitch. If I wanted another enclosure, I would buy this product again, based on my experience so far.

0 STARS! - My M.2 did not fit into the enclosure due to the excess amount of plastic that forms the "divide" in the slot. - Once I got the M.2 to fit, despite the device lighting up indicating it was receiving power and presumably transmitting data, both my computer and laptop did not recognize the M.2 being connected (this drive DOES work in computers). - The device itself got very hot to the touch, very quickly - hot enough to hurt. Needless to say, I am returning this for a full refund. Don't waste your money or your time.

Caveat - as you'll see in the review below, I did not get this to work with my hard drive due to my own mistake, but I'll review it assuming it would have worked. I bought this to recover the data on my hard drive when my laptop unexpectedly bit the dust. Unfortunately, I have an NVMe hard drive and it did not work with this enclosure, whomp whomp. That was my mistake. It does say in the description that it does not work with NVMe hard drives, only SATA, but I just went by the pictures of the slot where you plug in the drive - my drive looked like the pictures and I bought without noticing. So don't do what I did - pay attention to the description. I'm going to assume that it would have worked had I possessed a SATA hard drive because the computer actually *did* see that something was plugged in, it just wouldn't read the drive. The enclosure is pretty easy to use, but there are better ones for a few extra dollars (e.g. Sabrent feels sturdier and is easier to swap drives). I did not deduct a star for that since it is very reasonably priced, but keep it in mind depending on your needs. This enclosure feels plasticky, but sturdy. To get to the drive, you have to pull out the slot and it makes a grating noise when you do so. This is probably not a problem unless you plan to frequently switch out the drive. Inside there are several clips to secure the hard drive. As mine was the longest variety, I had some trouble getting the hard drive to seat down into the clip. After reading other reviews, I realized that the clips to secure the smaller size drives get in the way and cause the drive to bow slightly. You can bend those clips backward out of the way (and should if you have a long drive to prevent the drive from eventually warping). Once you've bent the clips out of the way, the hard drive fits fine, although then the clips do slightly get in the way when you slide the black portion back into the silver enclosure. Again, probably only a problem if you switch them out frequently. Finally, there is a tiny screw to secure the black and silver pieces together. They nicely provided an extra screw as well as a small screwdriver, which was a nice touch. Honestly, I probably won't even use the screw unless I'm transporting the drive - as I mentioned, the inner slot fits tightly inside to the point that it grates a bit when you pull it out so it's unlikely to fall out with normal use. A final note, the enclosure came with a USB A to USB C cord along with an adaptor to convert the A side to a C plug. That was a nice touch - rather than pick one they provided options. I do not know enough to know if the A side with C adaptor would affect the transfer speed (as opposed to C to C), but if you don't have a C port on your computer, a C to C plug would not work at all. It was a nice touch like the extra screw and screwdriver to ensure that you can use the enclosure out of the box without searching the house for tiny screwdrivers or cables.

This is a great item that really delivers! It's easy to use, looks nice, and lasts well, making it a reliable choice.

It is a great tool at a very reasonable price. I wanted to backup HDD into m.2 SSD but this enclosure is so great that I am using it as boot drive as well as work drive. Guess what, my work is not in the laptop anymore, it is always in my pocket - safe and secure. However, there is one problem; Kingston SSD SM2280S3G2/480G can't be inserted in the case because of components on the SSD.

It works perfectly. Landed well packed. I use this to get info from hard drives from peoples broken laptops. Pics etc for them.
