Sufficiently Breathless

the Original sing of Deep Purple started this band and I have to say it is quite an interesting listen. The music has its rock side but it also has a soul side too and there is lots of percussion in it. The music is not anywhere near as spaced out as the cover would suggest. Something to check out. Not the best album in the world but it is certainly entertaining and interesting enough.

Gentle psychedelia from another time. Acoustic strum and clean harmony mixed with a jazzy, more electric sound with a hint of prog. I'm not sure what more a person of a certain could want coming out of the speakers.

Phenomenal. I loved the first album and this is equally as good but with a different feel.. Did they change drummer? Only the drums dont seem quite as mind blowing on this album.

This is the second Captain Beyond album. It is less radical than the debut album, but I play it more often, it has a nice eclectic feel, more melodic than the first one. It sits on my shelf next to the first Automatic Man album, another forgotten masterpiece from that era.

Capricorn Records was a great company for recognizing talent but not always for figuring out how to market their acts or promote them. Captain Beyond disappeared into the mist of time not because this early supergroup deserved obscurity but because of the lack of marketing acumen on the part of Capricorn.The band's first self titled album scored no higher than #134 on Billboard's charts. The second album "Sufficiently Breathless" jumped up a bit to #90 so clearly the band had worked pretty hard earning an audience for their music."Sufficiently Breathless" was about as different when compared to their debut as one could imagine. The first album had each song flow into the other and had elements of blues, prog rock and just about every type of music one could imagine.Here the band tackles acoustic folk tinged music (the title track),blues ("Evil Men"), hard rock ("Distant Sun")and even Latin based music with elements of funk.I was kind of hoping that there might be some bonus material in the vault that might show up on the CD reissue. There isn't any but that doesn't detract from the strength of the material here. Some fans of the first album might like this one a bit less than the first but while this IS as different as one could imagine compared to the first album, that difference is precisely what makes this album so memorable because they elected NOT to remake the first album.Highly recommended.

Sufficiently Breathless is Captain Beyond's second album, and although their first, now regarded as a classic piece of 70's prog/rock is breathtaking, this one is even better.Released in 1973, when the music world was turning into glitter and silly make up, Captain Beyond went about their no-nonsense business and came up with this amazing album.The band had mellowed somewhat after their first album, and returned with a richly textured tapestry of sounds. Guitarist Rhino Reinhart achieves every conceivable sound neatly wrapped in a laidback almost latinesque rythmn section as a backdrop for singer Rod Evans.This band is made up of ex Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly members, but Sufficiently Beathless (and the first album "Captain Beyond") is far better than anything any of the members had been involved in prior to forming this combo.This is exactly the kind of album you read about in "intelligent"music mags... you know the kind of thing, when 30 years after being ignored, and spending decades in bargain bins, (ala Nick Drake among others), they tell you that an original copy is worth hundreds. It hasn't happened to Captain Beyond yet, but their day of reckoning must surely be getting nearer, and all those posey music journo mags will tell us that they were fans all along.Well! remember where you heard it first.This is THE undiscovered classic album.It does what it says on the package, and leaves you Sufficiently Breathless.Stuart Whitehead.
