There was a reason ESG sold so many books around the world...
5-star story! 3-stars for the publisher's laziness... = 4 stars.Erle Stanley Gardner was a consummate master of his genre and, in my opinion, his work is timeless and still appeals to today's readers. There were some elementary OCR proofing errors which made me think the publisher did not even bother to proof the OCR text. Pity... it would have been a simple one-pass proofread to catch the OCR errors.

Enjoyabel read. First novel with Lt. Tragg as head of homicide ( I think)
An interesting trip back in time. Law enforcement and Jurisprudence was different back in the '40s, but I enjoyed reading this Perry Mason mystery for the clever thinking and steps Perry takes, sometimes ahead of the Police, and sometimes in concert with them. I think this is the first story with Lt. Tragg and he starts our knowing Perry pushed right up to the limits, but is generally on the fight side of the law and searching for the truth. The novel has no Criminal trial, which is unusual for a criminal trial, but Perry shines in a civil case before the court.

The Silent Partner is not who you might think it is
LT Tragg is introduced in this case and proves to be a competent adversary to Perry, much better than Ham Burger ever was. If you have watched the series, Tragg is not quite depicted the same way. Lot of routine Perry Mason style jiggery-pokery with Perry secreting an invalid, getting a doctor to befuddle police and having Della running around pretending to be someone she's not, much to Perry's anxious worry. That was a particularly engaging scene. Beautiful bar hostesses and business owners and poisoned chocolates that do in a notorious candy pilferer, this is one of the really good Mason mysteries.

Top novel from Gardner's top decade
An excellent mystery from the forties (1940, in fact), the decade most fans think was Perry Mason's absolute best.Lt. Tragg gets what amounts to an introductory appearance here, and even a little love interest. Mason is tougher, more BLACK MASK MAGAZINE and less tv series, and all the characters have more hard-boiled grit than in outings from the fifties and later. There's more feeling of lived life to this book, too.The heroine is a tough-minded businesswoman, owner-manager of three flower shops, and we witness Mason in a civil, rather than a criminal, trial, though the core of the novel is a murder mystery as usual. Some good deduction and a less twisted plot than we often get round out an excellent entry. I've read about ten of the new Kindle Masons, and I think this is the best.

Anothergood one
I had this is figured out very early. I remember watching this one on TV. It was really nice to see the romantic relationship co finish to developer between Perry and Dela Street

Get to know Tragg better
I think this is one of the initial books when Tragg is introduced. Highly admirable work by the author. I am a die hard fan who just cannot skip a Perry Mason story.
