Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth: Prayers of Walter Brueggemann

Brueggemann's heart and words speak to our contemporary circumstances from a deeply grounded Biblical foundation. I find that each prayer draws me to lean into the Creator God with humility and hope. Grateful for the wisdom he offers as well as a pathway to the Divine that these prayers have become for me.

These prayers, so beautifully and transparently written, are a gift for the reader.

This is one of my all time favorite books. It is powerful, provocative, challenging, holy, and tender. I love the way Brueggemann crafts prayers so intimately with the Text.

A wonderful resource I will keep in my library and return too often. I especially am thankful that at the end of each prayer the occasion is noted. Many of these were written for specific texts of scripture that were about to be studied in class. I plan to consider using some of these prayers when I am leading a study of those particular texts. Also, the final section "Praying the Christian Year." I found those prayers useful last year and utilized them as prayers with our church staff during our meetings.

In my searching for a new daily book on prayer I found Walter Brueggemann'sBook. I can only say he has opened my heart to the deep new look at the Magnitude of God. Jesus tells us to come to Him as little children This is for our faith and trust These prayers have brought me to a glimpse of GOD I have to read them two and sometimes three times each day To receive the depth of the prayer Thank you

Walter Brueggemann's masterful, deep and awe-inspiring prayers will deepen your faith and help you to look beyond the distractions of daily life to focus on God.

Yes this an excellent book, no doubt about it. However my review is directed at the Kindle edition. Each prayer fits on one page, regardless of the length. This means that some display in very, very small type. And there is no way to increase the font size. The font size feature of the Kindle doesn't work with this digital document. At one point I had to reach for a magnifying glass. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time as then I would have bought the actual paper book. It would have been way more useful.

I chose to buy other copies of this book to share with friends. Why? I originally bought a copy after a week's course on the Psalms taught by Brueggemann. The bold honesty of a fervent believer--with the breadth and depth of both his reflections and experience--always confront my relationships and my spiritual honesty. A subsequent book that contained severalof the prayers from two courses that summer, as always, with date and place where publicly offered, confirmed that these were not words just for publication. Out of all the published works by WB, this one has "Awed... (&) Rooted" me the most.

How can we envisage God? He/She who is so vast and beyond our dreams and imagination?We are in grave danger of creating God in our own image, and what this wise poetic man does is use his eyes and soul to see a wider view of our Creator, the Great Spirit who is God, in his dialogue with Him. I sense very much that he listens, too.

Brueggemann is a a poet, the modern day psalmist, his theology teems with life and resonates with our own souls. A book of wise words and interpretations of scripture which delightfully form a springboard to our own prayers
