Behind the Mask: A Book about Prepositions (World of Language)

I love almost any book done by Ruth Heller. Her illustrations are dynamically colorful and enchanting, and her real magic is that she only wrote and illustrated non-fiction books. I bought this book because as a librarian for a School of Education it was a book, and part of a set, I wanted all future teachers to know about. Now as a new grandmother, it is an important part of the library collection I want to share with my grandchildren. Because it is written in lovely verse, and is colorful, the books is wonderful for even the very young children. Because of the complete coverage of prepositions, far beyond the intricacies of grammar that I usually remember, it can be used with high-school students. It should not be eliminated from use in the high school classroom because it is a picture book. Even adults enjoy beautiful, colorful pictures and high school students will be just as intrigued. They can also learn all there is to know about prepositions.

My 5 yr old is currently learning prepositions with our homeschool curriculum. Although she’s a little too young to really understand this book she enjoyed pointing out the prepositions (they’re bolder and highlighted) and loved the colorful pictures. I think this will be a great book to help with understanding prepositions once she’s older.

then get this book prepositions and how we use them. Heller also has beautifully drawn books about interjections, nouns, adjectives, verbs and more. Each one presents the purpose of the part of speech in left brain and filled-with-wonder drawings that will not bore the average child or adult. study them and your language and your writing will improve.

We have the language series by Ruth Heller, and love it. The illustrations are incredible, and really help make learning language fun. Plus, we use the books for our homeschool art classes too! They are a tremendous inspiration for the girls when painting.

Ruth Heller was a fabulous artist. Her books are an inspiration for those of us who illustrate and to the children who learn to read from them.
