They only have an "On/Off" switch, no code or "chime" setting. In the Chime position when the two pieces of the unit are separated by more than an 1/2 inch the Chime will sound. In the Alarm position the unit will sound its alarm when the two pieces of the unit are separated by more than an 1/2 inch. Now to be honest, I'm glad I did. This alarm system is darn good for the cheap price. I live in a somewhat shady area (saving to buy a house), and needed something for a little security. It comes with one big main door alarm and magnet, and 3 smaller ones for windows and/or doors in the house (not as loud as the main one, but a about half as loud to scare off someone). First I must say, and after reading the other reviews I must agree, the larger alarm component which is meant for the door is shockingly LOUD! And I mean so much that you can feel your eardrums throbbing. It even warns you in the manual that prolonged exposure can cause deafness! (seriously) I am like the reviewer that wanted a quick, cheap, but effective alarm system to scare off an intruder in lieu of nothing. I think this will do the trick. Activation is a cinch, and pretty user friendly. PROS: Cheap LOUD Dependable (except once, it went off when I walked in, scared the crap out of me) Makes me feel safer at night CONS: (after being armed) I would really love to see an adjustable timer for alarm set-off so that when you open your door, a robber doesnt have 30 seconds to snatch and grab stuff. A little beep emits when the door is open, but u cant tell an alarm is about to go off. The main door alarm is too loud for me to set at night. If it went off at night while I was sleeping, it would seriously give me a heart attack.
