Jack Dempsey, the Manassa Mauler

Dempsey was easily the most popular athlete of the decade
An interesting look into the roaring twenties and the first athlete/boxer in history to attract a million dollar gate. Dempsey was easily the most popular athlete of the decade. He certainly wasn't the greatest boxer skillwise, but his modest, affable nature outside of the ring and his daredevil, ferocious style inside the ring made him a one of a kind hero to Americans rich and poor. My only complaint is the read being a bit dry and repetative at times. For example, the descriptions of religious leaders complaining about how immoral and barbaric the sport of boxing was became monotonous.

Not what I meant to order but still a good read.
I'm not sure how I ended up ordering this when I was on the page of "Championship Fighting: Explosive Punching and Aggressive Defense" By Jack Dempsey himself, but I've always been curious about the man himself so I'm not all that disappointed that I ended up ordering this by accident. I still want that other book but I'll just have to order it later when I have more money.

Good book
I was born in 1947 so grew up hearing the name Dempsey quit a lot. The author of the book tells the story well and left me with an understanding of why of all the fighters/boxers who have come and gone through the years, the name Dempsey has had a louder ring to it than most.

Roberts and Dempsey..
You can always trust Randy Roberts to write not only about his subject but also about the times in which the individual lived....And you can always trust him to write clearly and unpretentiously....The most personal part of the book is his Postscript -- about the first and only time he met and interviewed Dempsey. Recommended....

No major complaints
The product arrived in a timely manner. There is a gash at the base of the spine. However, it looks fresh and may have occurred during shipping. It's unsightly, but does not affect the soundness of the book.

Top Biography
If you enjoy boxing and enjoy reading biographies then Randy Roberts is your man. Yet again he has written a superb insight into a sporting legend. There's something about Roberts' style that makes reading his work both informative and entertaining. He has the ability to take the reader through the life of his subject in such a way that you support the good things he's done, and forgive some of the bad.If you see a book written by Roberts, give it a go, you won't regret it.

Excellent account of Dempsey as a boxer, but very little about life following retirement from the ring.
This book has some great reviews, and in a lot of ways they are deserved. The author is clearly a serious boxing enthusiast, the level of detail in which Dempsey's fights are described is truly impressive. If you want to know about his career as a professional boxer, and the whole state of boxing in the 1920's, this is a great book. However, there is very little information about Dempsey's life following his retirement from boxing. There is little or nothing about his classic book on Championship boxing, which was considered for years to be the definitive technical book on the sport: particularly interesting as he was considered to be more of a brawler than a technical fighter. His enlisting in the coast guard during the second world war is glossed over, and there is no mention of his book on unarmed combat written during this period.I would have liked some more information on this period of Dempsey's life, so for me it is somewhat incomplete.
