Does this lens take good, crisp, clear pictures? Is it a good "walk about lens" Maybe for Disney or to get photos of the kiddos?

Mindy, so far the pictures I've taken have been good, crisp and clear pictures. I'm sure it would depend a lot on various factors especially light and distance. I have this lens on my Nikon 5000 all the time. It has replaced my 18-55 kit lens. I brought it with me walking around in a recent vacation to Maine and when we went sailing. It is a little heavier than the kit 18-55 lens but not as heavy as the 55-200 lens. It is so much more versatile. It has a wide angle and zoom. I'm no pro. Just an amateur who takes pictures of family and sights when on vacation. I love this lens. I hope this helps. Good luck.

My D5200 can auto-focus with this lens? I see the D5200 can AF only with some lens with "G".

Yes that shouldn't be a problem. For the D5200, you only need a lens that has a motor (denoted by AF-S). The "G" represents gelded, which doesn't have to do with autofocus

Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D 40?

Yes it fully compatible with one tiny issue. Becuase the length of the lens and the height of the built-in flash , at 18mm, the flash casts shadow over the tip of the lens. Zoom to 24mm and the shadow is gone.

The 18-105mm lens that comes with the D90 has a "G" after the apature numbers. Is this the same lens? What does the G stand for?

the "G" lenses don't have an aperture ring . f stop is selected with thumbwheel on camera
