Yes I’ve used it for this purpose but at the point you test remember to separated or untwist the two cables so that you are only getting one indication from a single cable, this avoids false readings. When you have an indication on one side of a bulb but not the other side then that is the fault.

How do you get to the batteries

Battery replacement is detailed in the user instructions. Basically, lift the pocket clip slightly to allow the battery compartment lid to slide away. Hope that helps.

As far as I am aware you can check at any point. If there's a current it will respond, but you MUST exercise your judgment that you are checking and identifying the correct conductor! Working live is potentially dangerous!
