Drawing and Sketching in Pencil (Dover Art Instruction)

“How to draw an owl”
While a good book on itself it’s not a reference that would walk you through all of the required skills or exercises. This is a collection of articles written by a prominent artist for a magazine. It does start with some basic like setting up the studio and other common sense stuff that you are probably already aware of. That takes probably ten first pages. After that it’s all about intricacies of a particular aspect, like what’s the best composition for an industrial landscape or how to pick best lighting modeThis being said the book as absolutely gorgeous. There are outstanding pictures done by famous artists, there are discussions of quite important subjects like what’s a drawing in general and so on. I don’t regret buying it, it might be a big source of inspiration for me sometime 20 years down this road.

Drawing and Sketching In Pencil---helpful, thorough, and art-inspiring.
I chose a five-star rating for Drawing and Sketching in Pencil because I very much like Mr. Guptill's style of drawing and his way of instructing. Mr. Guptill is very helpful and thorough when he explains why he approaches a subject in a certain way, and many times he discusses MORE than one way to get the job done. Did I say 'job'? Maybe I should have said 'achieve the end result'. This book helps a person to see that drawing and sketching is relaxing as well as productive and satisfying. For me, there is nothing negative about this book.

A little too wordy and less instructional.
I bought this book for someone to learn the pencil technique. It turned out a little bit too serious and wordy for my taste. The person lost interest after browsing through it. This is more a student in art school and not someone who is just starting and basic learning.

An Oldie but a Goldie
Guptill wrote this book early in the 20th century and it carries an illustrators overtones. However it offers clear and concise instruction in the art of pencil sketching from the basics to finer points of detail. I originally bought the book from a curiosity point of view, but, found it's practical and concise instruction very much to my liking even though the illustrations were clearly early 20th century.Beautifully presented this is a classic in the art instruction genre.

Excellent for All Drawing Students
Read, peruse, and find a drawing teacher! This book explores relevant info on materials, methods, options, problems/solution of drawing. Old, but definitely Not out-of-date. Also read Guptill's Drawing in Pen & Ink.

mostly text
This is mostly a dated, wordy publication on how to draw....not for beginning artists like me.

Excellent book on drawing direction.

Simply the best pencil book
Guptill's Rendering in Pen and Ink is the tour de force for pen and ink and Drawing and Sketching with Pencil is the same for pencil sketching.

Drawing and Sketching in Pencil
This is a detailed book that requires reading and referring back to at regular intervals. There are easier books in the marketplace and I will possibly buy one when I have more time for sketching but I know that all I really need is written and demonstrated on the pages of this book.

Ok
On kindle the pictures used as references are too small and you can't enlarge them or print them so it makes the book useless in my opinion

Three Stars
It's an old book. New condition. Content dated and a bit turgid.
