Fun but is it safe??
This toy gets 5 stars for fun, 5 for keeping my kid busy, but only 2 for design and 2 for safety.I had to give it 3 stars overall because toys are supposed to be fun and my son LOVES this toy. He has played with it for hours. However, the toy seems poorly designed. First, upon getting it out of the box, it was hard to figure out how the pieces fit together. The last piece of the wheel, the "attack gear" piece, was difficult to get on and had to be mashed on to the "spirit axle." Because they didn't seem to naturally click together, I was worried that we were assembling it incorrectly, and the instructions weren't much help. I tried searching Amazon and even YouTube for information about putting the wheel and "attack gear" together, to no avail. Maybe I am the only person who had this problem?! Finally after 30 minutes I decided there was no other way and forced the last piece (attack gear) into place. We then proceeded to try to launch it.The "launcher," which is the piece that stays in your hand while you pull the rip cord and launch the wheel, is poorly designed. It's hard to figure out if you're holding it upside down or inserting the rip cord in the right place because it has no clear front or back and you can easily grip it upside down. It also took us quite a while to figure out which side of the wheel to affix to the launcher. Hint to other clueless parents: it's the side with the hexagonal bolt that affixes to the launcher. For some reason we kept trying to attach the "attack gear" side to the launcher, with frustrating results.I think almost an hour went by while we struggled with figuring out how to use the toy. I am a little embarrassed about that because it looks like such a simply toy! If only we had a ten-year-old boy on hand we would have had it made. I have to admit my son is only 5 and I know the toy is intended for kids 8 and up, but at 45 years old myself I would like to think that he and I together could have figured it out! Well... finally we did.Now for the safety aspect. And I'm not talking about the wheel you launch potentially hitting someone, because that part is an obvious risk to anyone buying the toy. I'm talking about the spikes on the "attack gear," which can easily hit your left hand as you attempt to grip the tiny launcher while pulling the rip cord. If your fingers are not perfectly adjusted on the tiny launcher grips, you can easily get a painful scrape. The scrape is not likely to seriously hurt anyone, because the "attack gear" is actually made of rubber, or I would have given this toy a lower rating.Bottom line, both my son and his friends love these toys, so I suspect I'll be buying more of them. Nowthat I've figured it out I hope the next purchase will not be as frustrating.
