book two better
Less stilt, more natural. Descriptions well done, action fluid. Characters are developing very nicely. Looking forward to book 3. Til then

Continues the series but there are gaps
My biggest dislike is the time/events not covered between the first book and this one. This book felt incomplete because it referenced things that happened but not previously completed in detail. The standard I use for sci-fi series is Jack Campbell’s Lost Fleet series which is so good I’ve read it four times. With the Gallant series, I'm hoping to find a series I can enjoy reading several times.

not bad
Not great either we get FTL but referring to something as a forge as if you are blacksmithing parts that would require complex manufacturing was a bit much

Minute to minute on edge action & beyond
Keeps a constant wave of action, for you to figure out what's going to happen next, from new characters ,to new situations, good stuff...5 of 5 stars * * * * *

In-depth and enjoyable book!
I've read sci-fi in the past but I admit it's been awhile since I read this kind of in-depth novel. It's obvious this author is well-versed in the technological jargon that goes into writing a sci-fi space-travelling kind of novel: the descriptions of the spaceships, explanation of the physics and aspects of the different flora and fauna that live on the "paradise" island, etc. You can tell this is a writer who did extensive research and knows his sci-fi backwards and forwards. The characters are very well-written, and even though there is a pretty traditional military format to the way the characters are ranked, there is limited stereotyping and the characters are not easy to read or predict. In addition, as a female reader, I appreciated that the female lead character is not written in the cliche "damsel in distress" style, and is herself a very strong character. Very important! She ends up being a pivotal part of the conclusion of the novel, and not just because she's the love interest of the main character. As for the storyline, I didn't realize at the time that this was a sequel. Usually that means I find myself lost until the midpoint of the plot as I try to catch up on the main character's past. Luckily, even though this was indeed a sequel, the author spends some time organically referring back to the previous book so that the new reader can get caught up, but also without making it seem like an unnecessary flashback. Very appreciated! The basic story is about the titled character, Henry Gallant, and his adventures in space. This is a guy who gets around and gets himself into a fair amount of trouble in the process! Without giving away too many spoilers, Gallant finds himself on a heavily damaged space ship looking for a way to repair it safely while fending off a repeat attack of an alien spacecraft. While the new Earth-like planet appears to be the blessing they've been waiting for, Gallant soon finds that the "natives are restless" and he's landed in the middle of a political firestorm. He has no idea what he's gotten himself into, or who is behind some very devastating sabotage...All in all a definite page-turner!

Great follow-up to Book One
Non-stop threats and terrors make the future exceedingly treacherous for Lieutenant Gallant and the transplanted Sol (Earth) colonists of Hallo Colony. Henry Gallant finds romance and common cause with the determined young woman who leads the opposition group of colonists whose coalition moves against the isolationists of her restricted society. Highly recommended read, I plan to continue with the series. I read thru Kindle Unlimited on my Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 tablet.

Even if you haven't read Book 1, this is a great, stand-alone adventure for the Sci-Fi fan!
There is a special spot in my heart for Science Fiction novels, a spot that H. Peter Alesso's "Lieutenant Henry Gallant" has found. The second in the `Gallant' series, this addition is worthy follow-up to the first offering. In the 22nd Century, life is different - enhanced and genetically perfected though science. Henry Gallant, now a Lieutenant for the United Planets', is one of the few remaining, non-genetically engineered human beings, and the only officer left serving in the fleet. Being born poor and then being left an orphan, precluded the advantages of genetic tampering to be bestowed upon him. Instead, due to the lack of GE and his incredible survival instinct, Henry has emerged with unique mental abilities. His brain and his drive saw him through the journeys on the battle ship Repulse, finally landing him as the Engineer aboard the Intrepid, a FTL (Faster-Than-Light) prototype. On its maiden voyage to the Tau Ceti system, they encounter a seemingly Earth-like planet with the map designation of Tau-Beta. A planet drenched with 93% of its surface covered with water, and only small islands it boasts something even more important - life. The discovery ends up being anything but joyous. Finding a lost human colony and a war they thought they had left behind, an adventure swirls around them, stealing lives, revealing secrets and pitting Henry's impressive mental abilities against an ancient Artificial Intelligence he can't hope to win against. With non-stop action and full character development, this is 5 star read for any fan of Sci-Fi.

A fast paced narrative but lacking depth
I've just finished reading this, the second book in the series. Sadly I reached the end far before I expected to. In my mind, the series so far could do with an update. I would commend to the author to both fix a number of typos and contextual errors which stand out in places, but also to build and deepen the scope of the characters that have made the stories the success they are already. What I feel is missing is more on Gallant's thoughts, how he perceives his relationships with others, thus making more of his unique abilities. I feel we're maybe missing out also on the character of Neumann, as well as the senior - junior theme running through the books. This is perhaps element so far, to me raising the thought of the Sith in Star Wars - not in a negative way - but more along the lines of how such partnerships build, and how the influence each other...Keep it up! I've great hopes

Recommended!
Lieutenant Henry Gallant is in trouble right from the first chapter. Henry is serving on the first Faster Than Light (FTL) ship in the fleet, exploring the universe. The ship has plenty of speed, but its low on fire power, the book begins during a fight and The Intrepid isn't doing well!Henry ends up on the planet they were investigating, but what initially looked like a lush paradise has more than a few surprises. The people on the planet have a problem, and think they've found a solution; like in all good stories the solution may turn out to be worse than the original issue.....Lieutenant Gallant is a great character, which really keeps the tension up, I found myself really rooting for him! This is the second book in the series, and I haven’t read the first but I didn't feel at sea at all. I think I’d like to go back and read it to get some more background on Henry but it’s not necessary to enjoy the story.Definitely recommended

Innovative intrigue
Unexpected twists and turns leave the reader wondering just what is going to happen next. The reveals are exciting, the suspense nail biting, and the story somehow inexorably continues, the results in doubt till the very last minute. Thoroughly enjoyable read!

Just like the lead character - flawed
The good: fast-paced, some good plot ideas and an interesting baseline concept. The bad: yes it's science fiction, but that doesn't mean that the science has to be inconsistent, or the timeline for building an industrial base capable of generating space faring technology so unbelievably compressed. The indifferent: some of the dialogue reduced me to tears - of laughter!
