Just delightful!
I rarely give five stars, but I was so sad to see Detectorists end that I would have been very happy to immediately start watching it all over again. It's a gentle, quirky, funny, realistic, affectionate story without overdoing any of its aspects. The outdoor photography is absolutely beautiful. And everything ties up nicely at the end. To my mind, it's just perfect. It's officially about a group of metal-detector hobbyists, and we frequently see them out detecting (which I'd like to try!), but the show is more about them as people and their dealings with their friends and family. We bought it because of the good ratings and also because we had liked several of the actors in other things. It was especially interesting to see Mackenzie Crook play such a different (pleasant) character from Gareth in The Office, and to see Toby Jones play such a different (decent) character from Culverton Smith in Sherlock.(Please note that it's a Region 2 DVD, so will not work with US-only players, but we have a Region-free player.)

Buy with confidence
Well, the series is absolutely one of the best things you're likely to see on television. I really can't add to the superlatives that others have written. What I would like to address are the issues that some reported having with the packaging and playback quality. I originally viewed the series on Acorn TV on my somewhat slow streaming service. It was watery in places, but the quality of the writing and acting excused that. I was prepared for the disks to display the same level of quality, but--happily--it is crystal clear on my playback equipment; far sharper than the original streaming feed. Your experience may vary. The card-stock packaging is compact and lovely. It is a wee bit stiff, but I didn't have any trouble removing or replacing disks. Remember, we are supposed to be careful handing disk media, so be alert. I can't imagine anyone scratching the disks or having to resort to other storage cases. Again, your mileage may vary.I hope Mackenzie Crook will bring us similar projects in the future. This one is a gem!

What the British do best
A drama in the style that the British do best. Witty, quirky characters, tongue-in-cheek humor, and real soul. Serious and finny at the same time. We were thrilled with it.

Great series
I love this quirky little series and the dvds were perfect. The only complaint I have is the dvds are slid in between the three folds of covers and it makes it difficult for my RA fingers to pull each one out...worrying I might scratch or drop them.

Detectorist Series: Fun, English Hunor, down to Earth storyline
It starts off rather slow paced but don't let this scare you away. It takes time to develop the characters and story line. Along the way there is plenty of good English humor, and some parts that get you rolling (especially if you are a metal detectorist). Also, the human side, personalities, and relationships keep you wondering what will happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed the series.

It is that one GOLD coin we are all looking for in a DVD series.
This DVD set is GOLD. Everyone wants it, but we all mostly end up with ring pulls in our collection of collections. Honest, witty, truely is a great series, light, deep, fun, and quirky, its a stand out piece of the ups the downs, the friends, and odd ball charters in our life.

Such a treasure!
I feel like doing "the gold dance" having discovered this brilliantly clever series starring some of the very best actors the UK has to offer these days. The only downside is that they haven't made more seasons. I'm hoping they will at some point because it's such a great idea and so well done.

A gem,a one off.
A rare find indeed. Each episode is like nugget of precious treasure in itself and a gentle, plausible insight into the human condition. Story lines of genius and urbanity rub shoulders and the result is that rare commodity: a TV series that entertains, surprises and educates without the need for grand gestures or flashy gimmicks. The characters are beautifully crafted and played with understated mastery by the cast (this reviewer admits falling in love with Sheila, played by Sophie Thompson). Wonderful things are waiting for you here. You just need to go digging.Soundtrack is fantastic-shame it hasn't been released on CD(I'm very low tech)along with all the incidental music(main theme tune is available on down load).Have watched so many times as the characters are so reassuringly ordinary and have such funny ,unforced ,natural ,comedic understated banter. The disgraceful cynical commercialism of having to buy the boxed set to get the Christmas Special rages on in other reviews but I don't believe the genius of this creation should have its 'star rating'adversly affected by this-instead we have to trust the relevant executives will have to face the karmic outcome of their actions.I so hope Mackenzie Crook will want to make another Series at some point.

Sublime!
What can I say! Crook is a genius. This is comedy gold and an absolute classic. The writing, the cast, the location, the filming, the sentiment, the subject & the characters are sublime. I could watch it over & over every day (I don't tho!) cos it's so relaxing to watch. I love the 'Treasure' song by Johnny Flynn too - it just fits like a glove.I'm hoping there will be a 4th series...fingers crossed.

The detectorists
These are such fun! Little gentle stories about normal people with a passion for metal detecting and the amusing and pompous people they run into The situations that develop are great foils for the deadpan delivery of the main characters! Lots of misunderstandings and quiet humour makes each episode a gem! Highly recommended!

Timeless
People say that comedy is dead, they are wrong. Like music comedy moves on. The detectorists is a great example of good comedy. Written directed and starring Mackenzie crook it's as refined and as engaging a comedy as you will ever find. Great cast, great acting and funny. It's a character comedy that delivers. Unlike the office which Mackenzie was in I think that this will prove to be timeless. Worth a watch

Best comedy for years.
Really well written and relaxing comedy with lots of depth in the characters. Great locations and sets. My best comedy for years. The theme tune is pretty good, too. Good on the BBC for bringing balance. Let's face it, something was needed to cancel out Mrs Brown's Boys.
