Features 4 levels of workouts over a four week period. Each level incorporates Jillians s best-selling 3-2-1 interval system: 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute of abs. The 3-2-1 system is repeated three times in each workout and is designed to get you ripped in 30-days. Begin with week 1 and when ready, progress to the next week. Each week will get progressively more difficult, however each workout offers modified moves ideal for both beginners to those more advanced students. Review: Ouch, but GOOD! - This is a great workout DVD, and an excellent purchase if you are looking to expand your workout library OR just starting to buy exercise DVDs. But, a warning: it's hard! Especially as you get into the higher levels, as many of the reviewers have mentioned, your balance and strength will be challenged. A brief summary for potential purchasers: 1) This is an EXCELLENT DVD for getting a time-efficient, challenging workout. As a former gym-rat for many years until becoming a working mom, I have had some challenging classes - spinning, body sculpting, cardio - that left me very dubious about the benefits of "just doing a DVD" and especially one that is just 30 minutes. But this is an amazingly well-designed workout that left me breathless, sweaty and very satisfied with my purchase from the get-go. 2) Jillian herself makes this a really great choice. In my opinion, she is motivating, clear and very supportive, without being annoyingly rah-rah or cutesy (while still being fun). 3) Though this may work okay for varying fitness levels, in my opinion, it is best for someone who is at least somewhat fit and is looking for a workout that they can do at home. I really don't see how someone without a decent base fitness level could do this, especially when you get into levels 2-3. (If you are less fit, I would recommend Jillian's 30-Day-Shred over this video; it is easier). 4) Each of the 4 workouts is entirely unique in its moves, which will greatly help with the boredom factor as well as giving you good bang-for-the-buck with your purchase. ((NOTE TO THOSE WITH INJURIES - There are modifications for some but not all conditions. For instance, you are doing cardio in a prone (plank) position on Workout 1 and Workout 2 for a lot of the time. If you have wrist or elbow issues, it is not the best way to do cardio. So what I do is for those workouts is I simply shift to standing and do jumping jacks or run in place instead of spend that much time on the ground (but that is my modification, not on the DVD). Then, if you have knee issues, you will also have to come up with modifications because this is not easy on knees or low-impact.)) One more small note: On workout 3, Jillian accidentally omits one of the exercises from the first Strength circuit - the 2nd repeat of the row. All in all, a very worthwhile DVD to buy. If you are going to buy one, and you are reasonably fit, this is an excellent selection. I gave it 5 Stars rather than 4 Stars in spite of the negatives, mainly to do with modifications, because it's the overall best workout DVD I've purchased (out of about 25 workout and yoga DVDs). Review: 4 Tough Workouts = RESULTS! - Ripped in 30 has raised the bar, for me! Four workouts on one DVD, for twelve bucks....impressive. My FAVORITE Jillian Yet!
I absolutely love-love-LOVE this workout! It seems to me that Jillian took a lot of feedback she received in regards to her other workouts, specifically 30 Day Shred, and used the praise/criticism to create this incredibly effective workout. There are several changes she made that I really liked: 1) The workouts are *slightly* longer than 30 Day Shred, I think because the warm-up and stretching parts are a little longer and more involved. 2) LOTS of new moves are incorporated here! You'll see some familiar exercises, such as side lunges and lunges w/ bicep curls, but Jillian did try to throw in some new stuff that is still very effective. She also claims that she doesn't repeat ANY moves in any of the other levels. I've only gotten through level 1 so far, but I'll take her word for that. 3) In the strength circuits, there are 3 different moves per circuit as opposed to just 2. I personally appreciated this because it allows for more variation, plus in the past I have had trouble doing 1 strength move for a full minute and now you do each strength move for 30 seconds. Very nice! 4) I felt like towards the end of circuit 3, things began to cool down a bit - for example, Jillian finishes the final abs circuit with crunches and reverse crunches, which aren't the most difficult ab moves. In her previous videos she pushes you hard throughout the end, which some people may prefer, but for people like me who have been craving a bit of a cool-down without sacrificing extra time, this is beneficial. 5) I like Jillian's assistants in this video. Some of you might be familiar with Basheera, who I originally liked a lot in 6 Week 6-Pack. Basheera is Jillian's advanced assistant once again, and I could tell even in level 1 she was getting winded and very tired. Fortunately she did not CHEAT, like Jillian's other advanced assistant in 30-Day Shred. 7) Jillian takes a lot of time and care in instructing form, which is crucial. In the strength circuits, some of the moves are conducted more slowly, but this is not to make it easier - it is to help you concentrate on form! The slower pace gave me more time to sink down lower and really concentrate on what I was doing. I felt in some of Jillian's other workouts, they would fly through some of the strength moves and I would be struggling to keep up and would instead exercise with poor form. This is NOT the case with this newest video! 6) The music is much, much better! Ripped in 30 is by far my favorite Jillian Michaels workout video. I will continue to do it every other day and will throw 6W6P and the Shred in the mix as well. This is a very tough workout but it is enjoyable and goes by quickly. Totally recommend to ANYONE, whether you are beginner, intermediate, advanced, young or old, looking to lose weight or looking to stay in shape. You will NOT regret it! *PS* - I have now lost 30+ lbs. using various Jillian Michaels workouts, 6 of those being lost after I started Ripped in 30, which I got just over a week ago! I am also much stronger, much more flexible, and no longer have pain from a wrist injury I sustained a couple of years ago. Really, if I can achieve all that, I'm sure anyone else out there can.

Another excellent workout from Jillian
I have several of Jillian's previous workouts, including 30 Day Shred, No More Trouble Zones, Banish Fat Boost Metabolism, and Six-Week 6 Pack. I had been worried that this newest workout would be repetitious and similar to her other workouts, and, while some of the moves are from her other workouts, overall it's a great DVD to have, and I'm glad I got it to add to my Jillian collection. This DVD is also a great value since it has four workouts on it. Although the DVD cover (and Jillian herself in the introductory segment) say that each workout is about 24 minutes long, by the time you factor in the warm-up and cool down, they are closer to 35 minutes each. Within that period, you get a really intense workout since your heart rate stays elevated for most of the workout. The idea is to do the first workout for one week (5 or 6 times that week), the second workout for the second week (5 or 6 times that week), etc. As with her other workouts, this one also includes a modifier in each segment. You will need a mat and two or three sets of different dumbbells in order to do the workout. Like Jillian's 30 Day Shred workout, this one also follows her 3-2-1 format: three minutes of strength, two minutes of cardio, and one minute of abs in each workout. I've done two of the workouts so far, and they are *really* hard, just like her workouts always are. The DVD also comes with a thirty-day diet plan you can access online. I haven't done so yet, but will try to update my review after I have checked it out. Before I bought my first Jillian workout, I had been worried that they would be too easy since I consider myself an advanced exerciser and thought that her workouts were more for beginners. Boy, was I wrong! Her workouts are intense, and she really does use the most cutting-edge methodologies in her workouts, including metabolic circuits (weights and cardio with high-intensity interval training [HIIT] intervals) and compound exercises (where you use multiple muscle groups to burn more fat). Awhile back, I did a three-week rotation I found on Exercise TV's website called 30-Day Slimdown that uses some of her older workouts for thirty days. (Amazon won't usually let you post links in your reviews, but if you do a search with those words, you should find the rotation.) Although I didn't stick with the full thirty days since it's hard for me to just stick with one workout instructor for that long, in three weeks I saw a significant difference in my fat loss, even though I was working out less than I had been with other workout DVD's. Although this DVD is set up where you do each workout for a week, I usually don't use her workouts that way, and I still get results. I usually just mix and match them, either doing two thirty-minute workouts back to back or adding another workout to one of hers. As Jillian mentions in her intro to the first workout, none of the moves are repeated in any of the workouts on this disk; however, there are moves which are repeated on her other workout DVD's (like butt kicks and skaters), which is why I gave this four stars. I understand that it is probably really hard to come up with new moves for every single DVD she makes, but it would have been nice to have had a little more variety. Although I don't find Jillian as fun to work out with as I do other instructors, her workouts get results as long as you are consistent with them, and I think that this one will, too! As mentioned above, so far I have done two of the workouts and found them fun and intense, so I will update my review once I've done all four a few times. UPDATE ON 3/5/11: I've had a chance to download the meal plan, and it looks really good. It's nineteen pages long, and gives some good suggestions as to meal ideas. I also like that she is up front in it as to which companies she has a financial interest in. UPDATE ON 3/23/11: I've done all four workouts a few times now, and really find them tough, especially 3 and 4. What I also like is that they are short enough to add on to another half-hour workout if I want to do a half-hour of weights before doing this. If you like the format of this workout, you might also like Peak 10 Cardio Strength with Michelle Dozois , A.S.A.P. Hollywood Bootcamp 4x4 , and Patrick Goudeau's Lean Hot Body . All three of these other workouts are like Jillian's Ripped in 30 in that they use strength intervals (and you just need two pairs of dummbells, with no other equipment) and metabolic circuits, although each of these other workouts is about an hour long. (I always like hearing suggestions for other workouts, so hope that other readers do, too.)

Notice how the cover is "ripped" - So Cool!
I have lost weight and gained muscle using Jillians DVDs I am really liking this dvd! You'll need two sets of dumbbells (I have a 3lb and 5) "Ripped in 30" offers four different workouts - one for each week. Jillian recommends this 24-minute workout 5-6 days a week - hand weights and energy are all you need. The workouts are built from Jillian's body-shredding 3-2-1 circuits: 3 minutes of strength, 2 minutes of cardio and 1 minute abs, but Jillian also combines strength, cardio, and ab exercises into the same move. One exerciser shows easier options. Reminder: I'm 48. The exercises are tough but easy to follow, especially if you're used to exercising to DVDs, there are challenging variations from classics like basic crunches, but full sit-ups; not just jumps, but high-off-the-floor jumps, but the moves are tough. The warm-up is dynamic, the cool down with stretching is calming. I like the way Jillian will slow down and show you how your body should look during an exercise, she'll turn sideways to show you your form, she'll touch a muscle and let you know you should feel it there. Jillian is fired up, and in 4 thirty-minute workouts that go from sort of hard to "Wow! Why do my muscles hate me?!". One of the things I love about Jillians DVDs is it's the closest experience I'll get to training with Jillian (as my personal trainer) without being there. I've been following several of her DVDs every day of the week so I won't be doing this every day as I like to alternate. Her 30 Day Shred, I do every morning, I also follow a weight lifting program 3 days a week, at home and I walk when the weather allows or use an indoor walking dvd (Leslie Sansone). You can follow a restrictive diet plan she offers for download online - I eat healthy and am happy with my diet so I haven't looked at it. It's amazing what kind of torture your body can endure with just dumbbells, a mat and your body. I love that it feels like you can't go on but it's only 20 minutes. I love the high intensity, for a short amount of time. The squat swings feel good - stretching good, (she reminds you not to use your shoulders - just swing - feel it in your entire core. I listened to her on this part and refocused the swing - it felt great!) the Good Mornings feel good - stretching good. I am getting stronger on the side Plank Lifts ( I was doing low impact - now doing the higher impact, thanks to her 30 Day Shred), the lunges with bicep curls, I've done these in some of her other dvds but she reminds you (and shows you) to focus on the legs, the bend of your leg/knee, I noticed I went down further on this than other times because of her coaching technique in this dvd. It was nice to see that after the Running Man exercise, B was winded. The ending: Abs - Crunches and reverse crunches actually felt good - in a stretching sort of way - it felt good that I was finally on the floor. This dvd is offered in English or Spanish. Just a reminder, even if you can't do these exercises exactly like Jillian and the other exercisers are doing them: As Jillian says, "Perfect Sucks."

Recommended for getting stronger and more physically fit - not just for weight loss
I just finished Ripped in 30 yesterday, and I loved it! Now for some details: I did the DVD workout by repeating each workout for a week. I started on Sunday and went through Saturday, taking one or two days off during the week. I planned on one day off during the week because I read a review of a study that stated that people perform better when they take one day off per week. I took the extra day off in week one because I got too busy and I took an extra day off in week 4 because my knee was creaking a bit and I wanted to give it a break. Space requirements: minimal, but there is jumping so you may not want to do it on a floor above someone who is sleeping. Equipment requirements: handweights; I used 3 and 5 pound hand weights, but I would have gone up to 8 for some things if I had owned them. Around the beginning of week 4 I bought an exercise mat because I had previously been working out on concrete with a carpet remnant on it and that was not enough cushioning. Me: I was a little different than other reviewers because I didn't really want to lose any weight. I wanted more muscle and a better body composition, since I basically quit working out a year ago when we moved - just never got back into the habit. But my husband and I are going on a trip that will require a bit of strength and the ability to do some general physical things that I just didn't feel I had, so my real goal was to get "in better shape," but I had to be sure not to get injured and ruin my trip. We're trying to save money, so we just recently cancelled our never-used gym membership, and I'm honestly glad we did! I love group fitness classes, but I honestly can't find the 20 minutes to drive to and from the gym and 30 minutes to have a workout. That's over an hour when I can be done with these workouts in under 35 minutes and then take a shower in my own house. The workouts: You can read all about the workouts in different reviews. I thought that they were great. I did 30-Day Shred some years ago, and I thought that Jillian described the exercises in these workouts better than she described those. Some people have mentioned not liking to do the same workout for a week - well, I loved it! I started off the week not able to really do everything in the workout, and by the end of the week, I was able to complete most things without any modifications and some things with the advanced modification. I was able to move up in weights a bit, too. My results: Did I get Ripped in 30? Well, kind of! I am a total pear shape, and carry very little body fat above the level of my navel, so I can see good muscle definition developing in my arms and back and upper abs. I asked my husband about my arms to make sure that I was not imagining things, and he agreed that they look good, with significantly more muscle showing (he had commented on my "stick-like" arms a couple of months ago, so I know he notices these things). My legs... I think one reviewer said that her legs got bigger. I didn't measure mine, so I don't know. I still have too much fat on them to really see any muscle definition there, but their shape is definitely much better than it was. They feel much firmer, too, and when I sit down in a chair my thighs continue to look like legs and don't look like resting bread dough. So while I wasn't going for weight loss, and actually lost 0 lbs, I feel great about the physical changes I have seen. For those who are looking to lose weight, I am sure that if I did not reward myself for working out with an entire month of eating whatever I felt like whenever I felt like it, I would have lost weight. Did I get what I wanted to - in better shape for our upcoming trip? Yes! I feel much more confident for this trip. I am definitely stronger and more agile than I was before, with better cardiovascular endurance. I feel ready, and still have over a week to go. UPDATE: In spite of not working out very much over the next couple of days after I finished Ripped in 30, I actually lost two pounds just by returning to the sort of healthy way I was eating before. I'd like to think it's my extra muscles eating up those calories before they can make it to my fat cells!

From a man's perspective
OK, I'll admit that I felt like a bit of a weenie buying what many would consider a girl's workout DVD, but I had to try something new. At 5'9", lifting weights 4 times and week and cardio one or two, my weight had gone up to nearly 200 pounds. Granted, a lot of it was muscle, but I longed for the definition--especially in my abs, that I had when I weighed 175. I'd been eating healthy and my stomach was flat, but I was not happy with the way my body looked. So I decided to give something new a try. I've also read enough to know that combining strength and cardio is a proven recipe for fitness because working legs burns so many calories, as does adding any muscle. Under $10 is a ridiculously small price to pay. Jillian Michaels is a tough coach. Indeed, she's something of a dominatrix, the way she barks out orders and tells you not to make her angry. She circles around the two female assistance like a cat on the prowl (which, in fact, she may be...) or a shark circling her prey. But enough about why I like her. There are four workouts on the DVD, and they progressively get harder (though I actually find workout #3 to be harder than #4). All you need other than the DVD player and TV is a set of hand weights, or a few sets depending on whether you want to vary pounds. From the first workout, I couldn't believe how challenging it was. Jillian's strategy is 3 minutes of strength, 2 cardio and 1 abs. But in truth they all have a large cardio component. So much so that I was gasping for breath at times and look like I'd been hosed down when it was over. Although it's called Ripped in 30, the 30 minutes include a warm up (that I do) and a cool down (that I don't actually bother with, but is good). So really, you can easily get it done in 25 minutes and probably 20 in a pinch. A tough 20 minutes. Many times I asked myself how I thought I had been in shape when this tape was putting my through my paces. How can a strong, fit man not find this easy? I still ask myself how anyone not in shape can do this DVD. The answer is progression. Do what you can until you lose weight/get in better cardio and strength condition. Try and get a little better every time. That's what I do. I am totally bought into the concept at this point. I've dropped weight and my abs are getting clearer every day. My wife and kids notice the difference when I take my shirt off after just a few weeks. There are a few things I think readers may want to know: 1. If you have any injuries or bad knees, ankles, back, etc. you can work around them. For example, I have a problem with one heal that only bothers me when I do a lot of the jumping movements in the DVD. So when it comes to those, I hop on my stair stepper and step out the time without any danger of injury. It still works. 2. For someone more fit, you can increase the weight of the dumbbells you use. Jillian doesn't say what weight to use, but for example, I'll use 35 lb. dumbbells for bicep work. Routine #3 has such a killer triceps routine that without weight it's painful...and effective. 3. The Ripped in 30 diet is available online and it's pretty basic. Mostly low carb and she provides recipes, most of which are easily made if you so desire. However, 1600 calories a day is a bit light for a man. You'd be hungry. So I would suggest, if you like, modifying the diet to add a little more food but not junk food. If you really want to shed weight and can follow the diet, go for it! 4. Again, this is strictly individual: sometimes after a workout I'll hit the weights for about 15 minutes just to go heavy on areas I want to build up more. Other than biceps (and this is primarily for men), the DVD really hits every area. Perhaps you may want to add a little more ab work (I do the workout in the morning, generally, and the extra ab work at night). Her ab work is good but it's still just 3 minutes per workout--although dropping fat is the key to visible abs. Although Jillian recommends a day off per week I think that, if you want to build muscle, your body needs to recover more than 1 day. For men, I think a reasonable approach might be to do the workout for 2 days, light lift a day, rest a day and repeat. In summary, I've very, very pleased with this DVD and it has changed my routine and my body. I used to lift weights for double the time and just break a sweat. Now in half the time I'm getting pumped and soaked and I like it a lot. The workout has exceeded my expectations though and I highly recommend it!

I am a pretty slender person who normally works out between 3-5 days a week. But a few months ago I was briefly hospitalized, unable to workout for several months, and put on medication that caused me to gain weight. When I was able to work out again and got off the medication, I immediately ordered this DVD. I have done lots workout DVDs, but this one is definitely my all-time favorite. This one is pretty much the same thing as Jillian's "30 Day Shred", but instead of three levels it has four. The only other major difference is that you don't spend as much time on each individual move. For instance, in "30 Day Shred", you do four strength moves in three minutes. But in "Ripped in 30", you do SIX moves in three minutes, making everything feel waaaaaay more doable. When first started "30 Day Shred", I felt like I was literally going to die. But with "Ripped in 30", you move on to the next move right before you feel like you are going to die. If you are looking for a great workout DVD that makes you feel like you are working hard without making you want to jump off a cliff, this is the one. Challenging, but doable. I also loosely followed the free ripped in 30 meal plan that comes with the DVD (I had house guests for one week and disregarded the meal plan for that time.) I have never dieted before and was nervous about eating gross health food and feeling hungry, since I normally subsist almost solely on teenage-boy-sized proportions of buttery, rich food. I was so surprised at how easy it was to stick to the meal plan, and how much I enjoyed the food! There are several recipes for each meal, but I found one breakfast and lunch that I stuck to the whole time, and switched between a few of the dinner recipes. I also loved how she included fast food meals so when I didn't have time to pack my lunch, I could just run to Subway and still be following the meal plan. I only started to feel hungry right before the next meal, and the snacks were so yummy and filling. Even though I'm done with "Ripped in 30", I think I will definitely continue eating the same breakfasts and lunches. (The veggie and hummus pita is unspeakable delicious.) My one complaint with the whole "Ripped in 30" experience is that something went horribly wrong in week four and I injured my leg. I don't know what move it was (I suspect it was the crossover lunges where you "curtsey"), but something in week four screwed up one of my knees. I ended up limping around for almost a week before I could finally work out again. When I did, I worked out in front of a mirror to make sure my form was good and I wasn't screwing anything up to injure myself. Nope. Same thing happened but worse. I had to wear a knee brace and the pain was excruciating. While I don't want to rule out the possibility that some other factor caused my injury, I would definitely suggest you be careful in week four. And watch out for those suspicious crossover lunges. Maybe just do regular lunges instead. :( In the end, I was very happy with the results. I was able to finish in 45 days (it would have been 30 except for the knee injury), follow the meal plan, and I lost 8 pounds (almost everything I gained from my illness)! I'm not a big workout buff and I love to eat awful food, so if I could do it I know that anyone can.

A nice change-up from JM's 30 day shred
Ripped in 30 gives you 4 tough JM workouts - but the reward is so worth it! I love JM's 30 day shred, it has been my go-to workout for a long time, so it was time to try something different. Ripped in 30 workouts are a bit longer and more challenging for me, but the 30 day shred is a good way to break yourself into these workouts. I think they're intermediate to advanced, definitely not beginner. Why I love these workouts: - it's the reliable 3-2-1 circuit training that JM loves to promote because it really works - you get good muscle development and tighten things up quickly with this format; - the 3-2-1 (3 min strength, 2 min cardio, 1 min ab) circuits allow you to mentally get through the toughness of the workouts too - when I'm struggling with an exercise I know it's just 1 more minute, or 30 more seconds, and I can mentally pull through that and then I'm so grateful for the change-up to the next exercise; - there's so much variation in exercises it keeps you engaged and motivated and you don't overtire one particular set of muscles; - you can choose to modify exercises to make them easier or harder and she shows you how to do that; - you don't need much space or equipment (a mat, a couple hand weights and lots of water!) - I know some people find Jillian's tough-talking banter a bit annoying - but I find it super encouraging even if it's a little over the top; - Jillian, Basheera, and Shelly have amazing physiques and definitely inspire me to work harder and aspire to be more fit; - in this video Jillian says to only do the workouts 5 or 6 days a week and take a day of rest, which I appreciate because that's not stated in the 30 day shred DVD; - overall, these workouts are great for toning up, building strength, improving balance and coordination; - when you complete a workout, you REALLY feel like you've accomplished something valuable for yourself, and if you stay motivated and stick with it, JM really knows how to get the best results out of people; - you can also access JM's meal plan online, which she encourages you to pair with this workout DVD for best results; - I love that I can do these workouts in the privacy of my own home without much equipment and not a huge time commitment, so it's easier to talk myself into doing it! Sometimes I think the hardest part of a workout is just deciding to do it and then following through. My best tip for that is just to start by filling up a water bottle and putting on your gym gear (yoga pants, sports bra, running shoes). Once I'm dressed for it and have a water bottle in hand, I feel compelled to head to the mat.... I hope you enjoy this DVD as much as I do. Good luck in your fitness journey :)

Jillian-like: Fantastisch!
Here we go, der Sommer kann kommen :)
