Q: I'm not familiar with the "expert" line of Legos and see that it recommends ages 12+. Would it really be too hard for a capable 8 year old to build?

In all reality any person who can follow instructions can build any one of our LEGO sets. For this set the recommended age range is 12+ because of the play value in this set. Most 8 year olds are looking for sets that can be crash-and-smashed or can play out a battle/story. On the play functionality spectrum, this set is closer to being a display piece rather than an action set. With that being said it is a great set for a focused 8 year old who is looking for a Christmas themed LEGO set. For many families this is a set they build together every year. We have actually released a new Winter Village LEGO set every year for the past 7 years.

Q: does it come with imtructions?

Yes, it comes a detailed instructions

Q: Would this still be too difficult for and eight year old and a parent to build together?

My grandson put it together on Christmas eve last year. He was just turning 10 at the end of December. So I think with help an 8 year old would do just fine. It is a nice set and fun to build.
