CALIFORNIA RESIDENTS: Due to CA agriculture restrictions, your plants will ship bare-rooted, wrapped in moist sphagnum moss. In Brazil Laelia purpurata carnea grows high in the tree canopy where it is exposed to bright light and lots of good air circulation. Native to the regions of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, it is the national flower of Brazil. This Laelia species resembles unifoliate Cattleya plants. The tall pseudobulbs of Laelia purpuratacarnea have one leathery leaf. Flowers develop in a green sheath on the new growth. Leaves are medium to dark green in color. The 6 to 8 inches flowers are the largest flower of all the Laelias. They are very showy, fragrant (anise scent), and long lasting. Flowers of Laelia purpurata carnea develop on a 12 to 15 inch long raceme and have between 3 to 7 flowers. The individual flowers are well spaced and make an attractive display. This form has white petals and sepals and a salmon/coral veined lip. Will bloom late spring to fall. Sale seedling plants are actively growing in 2.5-inch pots with a 2-3 inch leaf-span. Will first bloom in the next 24-30 months.
