Well, it is a matter of personal choice. But if you are really curious about which one works best do the following: -Use the factory filter during one oil change interval. At the end of the interval, take a sample and send it to an oil analysis lab. There are options out there, look it up online. -Use an aftermarket cheaper filter and do the same. Then compare the data analysis from the oil lab for both samples, see which sample has the most contaminants and judge from there. Based on multiple lab tests that I've seen, I'll always go factory OE all the time. Didn't have any trouble removing it from the top, but it was just as easy from underneath. Not sure about the 2004 compatibility. Remember not to over tighten it, and apply a little oil to the seal before installing. Also make sure that the old seal from the previous filter isn't stuck to the block. **Q: Does anybody know the diameter?** A: I use this item on my '91 Miata and son's '03 Protege5.
