Trick - A Decade Later
What makes films like TRICK so memorable years later is that one can appreciate the fine talents of its four principal performers when one considers that this is the one film they are primarily known for. The plot is simple and adorable in its concept. The performers are Christain Campbell as Gabriel, a young gay man who writes songs and plays the piano and shares a tiny walk up apartment with his rat bastard straight roommate. The apartment is so small they dont have chairs so they use the bed to sit down. The second performer is Katherine, played at times with alarming enthusiasm, by Tori Spelling. She is Gabriel's best friend and an up and coming actress, who is obviously at an age where her efforts to get noticed are beginning to take their toll but she persists, especially when she performs at one of Gabe's recitals for his music class, with resumes and pictures at the ready and then later suddenly appearing at Gabe's apartment to use his printer to update her resume. It's all fun in the best sense, but that is only the beginning. One night Gabriel goes to a gay bar when he encounters the third performer, a handsome beefed up go-go boy named Mark, played by John Paul Pitoc. They actually offically meet on the subway afterwards and as would happen when two young gay men meet up for the first time, the obvious thought is how to make the most of whatever few moments they might have together. So they go to Gabriel's apartment for a quickie only to discover that Gabe's roommate is using the apartment to be with his girlfriend. The two men toss a coin to see who gets the apartment for the evening and Gabriel and Mark are suddnely sitting on the stoop of the building wondering where they could go to unleash their primal needs. The final performer is an overtly friendly bubbly personality named Perry who with his graying hair is the oldest of the principals and who befriends Gabriel and offers humorous dialogue on how to write songs, his past boyfriends, and a host of other topics that only an older gay man can offer to a younger version of himself. it is all done with great humor and honesty. And that is what makes the film so special. The characters are just being themselves as they try to grapple with life in the big city that is at times frustrating, rejectful and almost always cruel in every possible way. As the film goes along and the two young men still do not have a place to go, by the end of the film, it doesn't really matter. What matters is the story of the struggle to find friendship and trust in a heartless city. It can be found whenever and wherever and sometimes in the face of the most unlikely people.Charles Blanchardauthor of Mourning Doves After The Fire

Is it true this movie was made in 1999? It is still fresh, relevant and fabulous today.
I have mixed feelings about this comedy, as some of the scenes and characters were not too believable. Just to mention a few, the tap-dancing scene with Tori Spelling was a bit weak and had some clichΓ©s, the character of Miss Coco Peru as the evil drag-queen in this fairy tale a bit over the top, though I believe she has a following. And I really don't find comediennes imitating Marilyn Monroe that funny (it makes me think of the real Marilyn), even if they are as well built as the young actress here. So why am I giving this movie 5 stars? Because itβs best moments certainly outweigh its weak ones. There was Christian Campbell as a sweet starry-eyed musician who is a total loser in gay bars. Only after several viewings of the film was I able to appreciate just how elegant his performance is; his facial expressions, especially those sensitive child-like eyes, convey all the emotions of an almost innocent soul lost in an odd universe. Tori Spelling had some hilarious moments, as were all the scenes with a puppy. But without a doubt, the absolute gem of this film is J.P. Pitoc. From the very first moment one sees his amazing macho physique seductively dancing in a bar our hears beat fast and hard and we know this actor and this film are something special. But for his ears (excuse me if I am being rude) J.P. Pitoc is surely one of the hottest dudes to ever have appeared on any screen. So whatever happened to this beautiful man? Why have we not seen more of him? And is it true this movie was made in 1999? In its light-comedy sort of way it is still fresh and meaningful today. Therefore bravo to director and producers, including for the choice of that theme song at the end, which was sheer genius. Its melody and lyrics tell us that a mere trick of fate can sometimes bring that true love and that hot beautiful guy we all dream of.

Endearing film that stands the test of time
Trick is a feel good movie where the romantic leads happen to be gay. The first I can think of that wasn't about the trials of coming out, the devastation of the AIDS epidemic, or the repression society doles out to the gay community. It's a romance story where the only obstacle is finding a place to be together alone. The leads could have been swapped out for a straight couple and it would have still had the same sentiment.I loved this movie when it came out in 1999, and still love it twenty years later. A realistic depiction of a first meeting/date. My favorite part of the movie which many seem to be overlook is that Gabe the clean cut, good boy type is the one who views the evening as a one night stand. Mark, the go-go boy, never says that is all he is looking for. Mark, in fact, from the beginning shows interest in Gabriel outside of a sexual context. Asking him to play the piano, then to sing sans Tori Spelling. As the night continues we keep discovering that despite his looks and profession, Mark is a wholesome guy looking for more.

Utterly charming
Gay movies are usually dreadful, but this romantic comedy, in spite of an over the top Tori Spelling as the hero's best friend, is a delight. Nice young New Yorker who writes musicals goes to a bar, looks at a go go boy and dreams. Later on his way home the go go boy sits opposite him on the subway. Anyway one thing leads to another, but he shares a flat with a straight guy who returns unexpectedly with a girl, and the twogay boys must leave to spend the night seeking somewhere to do what comes naturally. Everything conspires against them. It is very funny, and come the dawn ends on a perfect romantic note. This could be true love after all.

A GEM
This movie is not readily available in stores and was great to see WOWBOX had a copy for cheap. It arrived quickly and in the condition that the seller said.If you like imperfect gay romances...this one is for you! It's fun and sweet but with a New York edge.

MUST SEE!
This is one of those rare gay movies everyone should watch, own and quote by heart.Even after 12 years, this is one of the funniest gay comedies, which can still squeeze an occasional tear (or two, or three). And Tori Spelling is simply divine (while after "90210" I really thought she can't play at all).
