How wide is the cutting area ? What is the widest size item I can put on without cutting it narrower ?

cutting area is 3 inches. It's so easy to use and clean. I rarely have to cut onions before I use it on them.

how does this model compare with the so-called "advanced" versions ?

This one slices wafer thin even at widest setting which is exactly what I needed. If you need a slicer with an array of settings you’ll need a different one

Does it work okay for lefties?

My son is a lefty and he has no problem with it. It is very, very sharp! Use the furnished slide guard.
