Hoppe's No. 9 Cleaning Kit with Aluminum Rod, .30-6 Caliber, 7.62mm Rifle

First time purchasing a gun cleaning kit and had been referred to Hoppes by a friend of mine who is an expert shooter. Using this on a recently purchased m1903a3 Springfield rifle--the rifle was gunked up as you can imagine for being 75 years old!Comes with instructions on how to clean gun barrel and 50 patches inside. You also receive a jag, a standard patch holding rod tip, and a bore brush.I ran a patch of the no. 9 solvent down the barrel, waited 5 min for it to soak in and break up the corrosion, and then ran the brush down the barrel. The first pass down the barrel was tough because of the dirt inside the bore, but after that most of the dirt was gone. I made a couple more gently passed with the brush and then began to remove dirt with 5 or so dry patches. Lastly, I ran an oiled patch through the bore to act as a rust preventative. Overall nice set. I have read complaints about people breaking their rods and brushes and, the bottom line here is that if you are gentle and work slow with your materials, they will not break. Take care of your cleaning supplies and they will take care of you!!Not a big fan of it, to be honest. I bought one and it wouldn't work well for a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 or an M39. Maybe a carbine model?The rod set does not stand up to heavy use. It cracked in half on the threads, fortunately after I pulled it out of the barrel on a pass. Hoppes No. 9 is an okay cleaning solvent, of course, and the lubricating oil does the job fine. I personally use a one-piece 44" Dewey nylon-coated rod for my Mosin cleaning when using corrosive ammo. I also use Boretech Eliminator, which lacks any smell and works amazingly as compared to Hoppes No. 9, but these items also cost much more. The Hoppes kits work fine for my 12-gauge shotgun and .22LR rifle since those guns are fairly low-maintenance and don't require too much cleaning.Overall, DON'T get this if you're using military surplus and are shooting corrosive ammo. It won't stand up to the type of punishment you need it to. However, if you just have a Savage Axis or something and want to clean modern-production, clean-burning ammo out of it, it'll do the job well.

Had to use both extensions for it to clean the entire barrel from the breech side. Works pretty smoothly with patches, but the brush that came with it was exceptionally hard to move through the barrel. After moving it through the barrel, it got stuck, but the brush was protruding through the muzzle end, and was able to unscrew it from the cleaning rod. The only thing that actually worries me about the cleaning rod itself is that the handle is a little loose and spins freely. Not sure why this is a thing, but it is. The cleaning products included with it were of high quality, as is to be expected from a company like Hoppe's, but there isn't much. Had to use 15+ patches to get the barrel relatively clean, but that was mostly my fault for waiting so long to clean my Mosin.Bottom line - If you're looking for a cleaning rod long enough for a Mosin Nagant barrel, this kit has it, and the rod reaches to the muzzle from the breech, but you do/should take the barrel out of the stock for it the most comfort while cleaning.

Works well. I have been using Hoppes brand cleaner and lube for a few years on my 9mm and just went with what I was familiar with. The package is a decent value but you will need to find your own carrying case eventually. I would have paid a little more if it came with one.

I needed this to resurrect an old rifle that hasn’t been fired for 50 years. After following the instructions, the inside of the barrel looked like new. It would be nice if it came with a permanent storage case. The packaging it came in isn’t sturdy enough.
