Pearl OM1 Clamp-on Tone Control Muffler

The answer, especially for smaller drum head sizes
I am a percussionist who most often plays in smaller venues (tasting rooms & bars), and most often with an acoustic guitar and a bass. To me, being able to control volume is huge, and over the last few years, I feel like I've put a lot of trial-and-error research into this effort. On top of volume (which I mostly control with foam rings mounted just beneath the head), I like to keep things sounding more like they do in studio recordings as opposed to live gigs, which to my ear is often a matter of controlling ringing and overtones. I can't help it, I prefer those shorter, "dead-er" tones, and always have. Most of the competitors for this type of rim-mounted pressure pad are too long for smaller-diameter heads—they intrude too much into the playing area. Leave it to Pearl to understand this and make the arm shorter than all the others. I was happily surprised to get these on and see how non-invasive they are. After a lot of different placements, I was surprised that I preferred the sound of this when mounted on the underside of my snare. I have them mounted on my toms (on top and with less pressure, for some reason, just barely making solid contact with the head) and on a second snare I occasionally play with my left foot (don't ask).So I went from a skeptical I-bet-these-won't-do-it-for-me attitude to a full-on evangelist. These work!

A good old school solution
I think these are a little expensive for what they are, but they work effectively. Easy and quick to adjust.

Only fits a snare or tom type rim.
I bought this thinking it would work for a bass drum., Looks like someone else discovered this in the comments, maybe I should have read further along. Pretty good quality, but wish the clamp mechanism made it more versatile for the $.

Ugly but effective
This contraption is a bit big for what it does. The cheaper plastic clips are just as effective. This is like a crutch for your drums ... ugly but effective.

Good Old school muffler
These old style muffler are hard to come by these days, but they are still an effective way to help control overtones and boominess that allow you adjust it accordingly to your own personal taste. I use this on my Pearl snare with Super Hoops II and it fits fine. Thanks Pearl for making such a nice quality unit at a decent price.

Good option for controlling ring and overtones
Works very well to control overtones on snare drum without affecting attack or stretching head as internal mufflers can do. Very adjustable.

Love Pearl but this was not a winner...
I love Pearl products in general - but this thing did not work for me. I thought it would be a very nice looking way of dampening my kick resonator head, since I don't like having anything in the bass drum but air.So this was going to be an awesome old school way of bringing just a little dampening to the mix as an alternative to moon gels which work great, but look like you have bits of gum stuck on your bass drum. My drums are beautiful Tama Superstar Classics and the moon gels really detract from the elegant silver sparkle wrap.Unfortunately, this thing rattles no matter how much I tighten it. The muting part works fine, but it clacks and for recording that won't cut it!

Works
Stop snare buzz from sympathetic resonance ffom toms.

Handy item to have but flimsy armature...
I was searching for an external bass drum muffler which I thought this was but its too small. I use it on a 10" timbale to occasionally "deaden" the sound. The armature can adjust the muffler distance from the drum head HOWEVER ITS TOO FLIMSY. I have to bend it on occasion to align it properly. When the adjustment screw is loosened to bring the muffler off the head a bit, it doesn't regress the muffler properly and the screw just loosens ineffectively.

Cheap
Cheap, does not muffle properly and does not fit all rims.

Inutile
de la camelote. Très cher pour ce que c'est. Privilégiez plutôt l'original. Pas beaucoup plus cher et beaucoup plus robuste.
