Can the handle be removed to fit a skimmer sock on the basket?

Sock can be used with it. I do it all the time

Why does basket split and bottom keeps breaking ?

Because..... it is plastic. Plastic that is exposed to chemicals, running water and stress will become brittle. 3-4 year life cycle. Add a salt water chlorine generator with low ph and you’ll get less of a duty cycle. Even rocks will erode. It’s Plastic. A steel basket will corrode in /about the same time.

Does the lip/edge of this basket have a notched in area in both sides so that it can be turned into place into the skimmer area?

I do not recall any notches on the skimmer basket. I believe it just sits inside the skimmer housing. The only notches are on the actual cover for the skimmer which is turned to hold it in place.
