I think Guthrie knows what he’s talking when it comes to guitar *by E***. on Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021* So I’m a classically trained guitarist who just decided about a year ago to start on electric (for real). I had dabbled in electric guitar here and there for many years, but never took it as serious as classical. I spent a month looking for the best electric guitar book I could find. The Reddit guitar community highly recommended this series, so it was a no-brainer.Ok let me talk about the book specifically now. You need to have a rudimentary understanding of guitar before using this book-—it’s not for total beginners in my opinion. The book contains a long foreword from Guthrie that’s filled with a lot of real good advice on questions that not a lot of books go over. The real meat of the book starts with the scales and chords chapter. I really like the simple way Guthrie explains everything. You should just go ahead and learn all the exercises—there simple but really help right and left hand communication (very essential). The CAGED system is covered in detail as well as the modes.Anyway, you should just buy the book because Guthrie Govan wrote it and I think he knows what’s going on in terms of guitar playing. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the best *by E***B on Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2006* Guthrie Govan is one of those rare guitar players who has mastered the instrument. His style and touch is that of Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane. He is truly a great, and it is sad that he like the aforementioned will probably never get the recognition he deserves, but such is life.Where this book excels above the rest, is its simplistic approach to the subject at hand. It never bogs you down with whiz kid termonology, it is straight-forward and spot on. This is not to say that it won't appeal to us nerdy guys who want to know it all, it just balances out to make the perfect book.The exercises are fun to play and will tie your fingers in a knot in no time flat. But more than that, they work the things that most guitar players never think to work. Let's face it, there are two ways to practise, the right way, and the wrong way. That is why you meet players who have been playing 20+ years and they are mediocre, and then you meet a kid who has been playing 4 years and he burns like the best. One practised the right way, the other spent his time noodling scales.This book is a must have if you really want to delve deep into guitar insanity. But be forewarned, this book will not make you play like Guthrie, only years of hard work will do that. I have quite a few other technique books by Troy Stetina, Satriani, and Musicians Institute I believe. They are alright and have some decent and some useful information in them but have not made the impact on my guitar playing I was hoping.Particularly useful in this book is that exercises and ideas are written in both standard notation and tablature. Sometimes its easier to see patterns in standard notation than it is in tab form; notation also helps a lot in learning the fretboard. I was worried this book would skimp on the technical side of playing and be geared more to standard scale exercises like other books I own. This is not the case. Two handed tapping, eight finger tapping even, legato picking, strange sequences similiar to those found on Vai's Passion and Warfare album, odd rhythm grouping patterns, double stops, and even how to make your guitar sound like a Hammond organ and other intruments are included.This is a fantastic book geared to highly technical guitar playing. References to other great guitar albums are also sprinkled throughout to expand your listening library. I would highly recommend this book to anyone serious about mastering the guitar and wish I had it years ago myself.
