We saw this exhibit at the Legion of Honor/ Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco a few years ago! I was so excited to find this beautiful book that has very similar art that was displayed!

Excellent.
A fine choice of images and text. The contrast in subject matter and the more painterly imagery are clearly presented.

Misleading Title
Newsflash, to all the other idiots out there: Japanese prints were ALL in the age of Impressionism anyway! We're just gonna resell you all the old Hiroshiges you've already got, and make it sound like something new!For those even slower than me, who didn't figure that Lautrec borrowed from the Japanese when doing posters for the Parisian club 'Le Divan Japonais', there is a chapter telling you that toward the end.Japanese prints are not Japanesque, they are Japanese. The book's title therefore implies that it will be full of Japanesque Impressionism from France (or perhaps Impressionist ukiyo-e from Japan), but it is not. Some French guy Henri Riviere, did do one or two Japanesque paintings in France around that time (a bit like the later Tintin maybe), but the only significant one is on the cover of the book there.
