The hair is yaky and is much heavier

No, the hair is coming out of the head like a typical imitation scalp.

Q: What material is the head itself made of?

Try dipping the hair only in semi boiling water to loosen the tangles and comb it out from the ends up. Kinda like how they do in the salon when you get braids. It is synthetic hair so it will tangle easily. Hopefully that helps.
