These do seem to work
I had a big heron problem. I designed my latest pond to be heron proof with no areas where they could wade and eat my fish. But the buggers just fed from the side of the pond without getting their feet wet. So don’t believe the experts re predator traits.Since these have been in the pond there is a distinct change.I think that the herons land on the mats and find themselves sinking so they bigger off.The downside for me is that I cannot secure these in place and the waterfall and pump/filter return causes these to float into a cluster at a point least affected by the current. I intend to continue to use and try to secure in some way.My local fish/pond centre did dismiss these as rubbish but I do believe they work.

Fiddly to put together
Bit fiddly to put together. It does float. Some reviews says it sinks. It will do if not connected together properly. You dont get enough clips to tie it together properly. I used small black cable ties

They don’t float
A bit disappointed with these as they clearly don’t clot on their own. I bought them for my small pond after a heron scoffed most of my fish. I thought it would simply be a matter of placing these on the water and they’d happily float but no… they sank. You are required to connect them together to support each other and at least a few have to be propped up by fixing to the edge or by sitting on top of plants. The supplied clips are ok but I got better results using some small black tie wraps

They don't work like you'd hope them to.
Theyre fairly cheap and cheerful. They float provided the water is still, that there are no plants affecting them and as long as nothing attaches too them like pond weed etc. The shape will also leave gaps such that I suppose you could try cutting them up but it would be a bit of a mission. They also don't fix to each other very well with the clips provided so I would consider using cable ties, provided this doesn't cause them to sink further. Sadly I won't be using them on my pond.
P**.
