Pediatric Swallowing and Feeding: Assessment and Management, Third Edition

I bought this book recently to create a better pediatric dysphagia/feeding library. This is a helpful overview of what you might come across in the field. I appreciate all the resources.

Pros: updated by about an additional 150 pages. Concise resource on embryology and does a good job of describing the interface of multiple variables in the child with feeding issues.Cons: Since it's so comprehensive it can't go deep in some areas. To me, that's ok because I pull from current literature to support other information I need.I'm board certified in swallowing and swallowing disorders for both pediatrics and adults. The earlier version of this text was an excellent resource in preparing for the exam. I'm sure this one will be as well.

I bought this a few years ago when I first finished grad school. I have been working as a schools-based SLP for a little over four years now.I consulted the chapter on hypersalivation (which they term "drooling"), as I have regular interaction with several students who have this issue, and was immediately appalled at some of the language choices that were used, which were outdated and harmful. They literally used the "r" word in this chapter, which, for a variety of reasons has fallen out of favor. They also use terms like "normal" and "abnormal," which aren't particularly helpful. Many families who are dealing with feeding issues are already told repeatedly how their child isn't "normal," which perpetuates shame and isolation.Disability rights advocates have been arguing for a social model of disability instead of a medical/deficits-based model, and this book is coming from a medical model of deficits. It's time to do better.

Just purchased this as it was a "new" edition. In just flipping through the book I noticed that the information on feeding infants with cleft lip palate to be VERY outdated. As someone who has worked in a cleft clinic it is disturbing that this information is so outdated especially if this book will be used as a text book. I am almost afraid to look at the remainder of the book!
