They're vinyl coated metal.I bumped the tablets a couple of times, and they held tight.I'd definitely buy again and recommend to friends and family.I look forward to using this on a plane's tray table.Maybe I'll mod it a little by adding a cardboard velcro wedge as tray tables aim downward.I would have given this 5 stars if the unit came with more versatility (extension cable/hooks?) to hold my tablets (or larger tablets) from the corners. At the moment, given that this is intended for smartphones more, it holds the tablets on the middle top and bottom.
