GREAT DRIVE AND GREAT SERVICE AT A GREAT PRICE... BUT READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!!
My review is for this product as purchased through the Amazon Seller STORITE! STORITE'S price and customer service were ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!! Although I do not feel it was intentional for this Seller, Storite, many sellers use deceptive practices in their descriptions of Hard Drives they sell. The problem is that these drives are "NEW" according to their description, but they do not come with the consumer protections one would normally expect because they have no warranty whatsoever from the manufacturer. Further, they are described as "OEM" which literally means "Original Equipment Manufacturer", and generally means an item is the original item made by the original manufacturer (which in this case is Western Digital). However, over the years this term has come to incorrectly mean that they were "bare" drives originally sold to some OEM Computer manufacturer or wholesaler, not by the actual OEM part manufacturer to an authorized NEW ITEM retailer. Therefore, they have no warranty whatsoever from the original manufacturer. The reason they have no warranty is that these drives were previously sold, in bulk, to some wholesaler or computer manufacturer, and Western Digital therefore shows them as being purchased long ago (in 2006 in the case of the one I ordered), so they have no warranty from Western Digital at all despite being "NEW" (as in, never used). These sellers are not "authorized retailers" and are now selling them after having obtained them through some other party, not directly from Western Digital the drive manufacturer, so although they have never been used they are considered previously sold, with no warranty, by that manufacturer. I only found out this information, after purchasing my "new " hard drive, when I contacted Western Digital to register the drive for its warranty (from WD, which I thought would have been expiring five years after my purchase date). I then contacted Storite (technically Indal Enterprises in Calabasas, CA), the Amazon Seller from which I purchased the drive, to try to get this straightened out. I spoke to an extremely friendly, personable, and helpful individual named "Kevin". After explaining the multiple frustrating emails and phone calls I had been required to make before finding out the disturbing facts regarding my non-existent manufacturer's warranty, and the conflicting warranty information on their/Amazon's website listing for the item, he provided me with the following information/assistance. He gave me what I felt was (1) a very honest and heartfelt apology for my trouble. (2) a very understandable explanation for the lack of a clearly accurate description of the nature of the drive and its warranty that they (Storite) were providing, and (3) the promise that his company was working with Amazon to get a much more thorough and clear description of the nature of the drives added to their listing. He explained that these drives are new, never used in any manner, and still completely sealed in their original, sealed anti-static bags, as originally sold by the manufacturer. He also volunteered to extend my warranty to the longest time noted anywhere on the listing because time periods conflicted on different areas of the listing. Further, he then (4) gave me his personal offer of additional support which fully provided me with full and complete satisfaction. The price was great, the drive worked extremely well, and since I know that WD makes great, fast, dependable hard drives, I'm thrilled. Kevin even gave me another identical new WD hard drive, at a GREAT price, to keep as a "backup" in case my new one ever fails in the future. I just don't think you can find a better deal on a better hard drive anywhere, and the customer service I received from Seller STORITE was absolutely OUTSTANDINGLY EXCEPTIONAL!!! *****ONE GREAT PIECE OF INFORMATION IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING BUYING THIS DRIVE TO REPLACE AN OLD ONE THAT IS FAILING***** Just to let you know, both Western Digital and Seagate (the two top Hard Drive manufacturers) provide free software (made by Acronis) on their websites, and Tech Support via telephone, with which you can very easily "clone" your old hard drive. With this process, the software guides you through making an identical copy of your old hard drive, then transferring that identical copy to the new hard drive (as long as the new one is at least as large in storage capacity) before you use it. This means your new hard drive will already have your operating system (like Windows XP, Vista, 7, or ???) on it, along with all of your other programs and data files, complete, without having to re-load ANYTHING to that new drive individually. HOW GREAT IS THAT!!!

its a pata drive.
It's a drive, with ide. If you know the interface of the drive, you know that your not going to get 6gbs the aging sata 6 would provide. It works for what it's was intended and designed for during that time. I can see this drive being used for tivos and Playstations to replace antiquedo drives. I'm using for an old ide external enclosure And it works find for my needs

it's as described (old , but new as in unused stock from a few years ago)
i put this in a 2002 gateway 700xl , the old 120gb hd was dead. i opened up the pc, made sure i was touching the metal of the tower case while i removed the old hd and plugged this one into its place using the cables that were on the old hard drive ,closed up the pc and turned it on with the win xp restore disc i had from my pc in the disc drive and installed the os. everything went fine . it initially only showed as a 137 gb hd but after researching online with my other pc , i was able to update the old pc to get the xp sp2 & sp3 back on it as well as update drivers from the intel website ( i think one was intel driver accelerator ) finally getting it to recognize the drive size as 250 gb after all the updating , however i had already formatted it at the lower size so the rest showed up as unallocated or free space and after googling i found a program (easeus partition master 10.1 .... it was free) that let me expand the partition to take full advantage of the 250gb, well 232gb . and now so far so good , haven't had any probs (knocks on wood) and its been over a week. it arrived to me in an anti static bag wrapped very heavily in bubble wrap and additional packaging. i was pleased with the carefulness of the package and my kids loved the bubble wrap ,lol. the seller was goharddrive , definitely pleased with them.

Monitor the health of the drive.
I bought the same drive a few days ago from another seller. My purchase led me back to this listing. The status said the drive was used 0 hours indicating that it had never been used. However, the drive failed after only being powered on two hours. The problem with these drives is that they were manufactured a long time ago. There is no way to predict how long the drive will last being so old. My drive was manufactured in 2006. It appears to not have aged very well. One last thing...normally hard drives are shipped in a box with a lot of padding. The drive I received was shipped in a thinly padded envelope. It is possible the poor shipping practice could have led to the drive being damaged in shipment. I will never know if that was a factor.

Review for 2 HDD's
First Review for purchase from Storite: well packaged in anti-static envelope, bubble wrap & box. HDD has a thumping sound. If I played the piccolo, we could join a fife and drum corp. For the price, cannot complain. Timely arrival. One star off for the noise. Second Review for purchase from GoHardDrive: well packaged as with first purchase. Seller to be commended for stating up front that these are HDD's manufactured in 2007. Quiet HDD. Timely arrival. Would have given this second purchase 5 stars but no way to split the difference or to have 2 ratings. These hard disk drives were installed in old Dell desktops with Window XP, which will not be supported after April 8, 2014. Larger capacity enabled dual-boot with XP and Linux Mint 16. XP had to be preserved for applications that run exclusively on it. Very inexpensive way to upgrade hardware and software.

Issue Resolved!
Don't see my original review which I gave 1 star. I now update to 3 stars because the distributor aka 'price slayer' has gone the extra mile to help me resolve my issue. My issue proved to be as follows: "My drive would not format beyond 137GB. This is what happens when the FireWire case that you put the drive into is not compliant with ATA-6. Or to say it another way, when the case is only compliant with ATA-5." He found this info for me and then Amazon accepted my return. Lesson learned. Thanks Price Slayer!
