Excellent History of Film - Third Edition Rules
This is a solid introduction to film, covering literally thousands of directors from around the world, as well as all the major film movements from the silent era, though the talkies, and into the digital era. Hundreds of stills, easy to read text, a clear timeline from the early 1900s to the present. Particularly good on women directors, as well as African-American filmmakers. Highly recommended.

great book for overall film
This book is amazing for an Overall History of Film and definitely great to see what kind of films were great in their times and the effects of history that had on the movies. Their are many films in this book and i suggest watching them all to get inspired to create your own movies because the movie industry portrayed in this book is much better than the industry we have now

A "world" history of film that excludes Ireland
I had read this book for a college Film class. Overall, the book is well written and entertaining. However, while it provides the fun history of film industries in other countries; from Europe to Russia to Asia, etc, there is one glaring exemption. The authors have not included ANY information on Irish Cinema. There is zero mention of the names of directors like Jim Sheridan, who directed "My Left Foot," (which launched Daniel Day Lewis' career!) Also, no mention of director Terry George, who worked with Sheridan to create "In the Name of the Father," (another monumental Daniel Day Lewis film,) and who later won an Oscar for directing "Hotel Rwanda." These movies were made in the 1990s, and Ireland's film industry has only grown sense then. For a book that was so careful about being inclusive, the authors give near zero representation to Ireland. For a College Textbook I would that the authors would create this omission. Other than that, the book is a fun read!

I bought this book as a supplement to my Film Appreciation Class in College. I found it informative, especially if you are a movie buff.
