The Next Step Forward in Word Study and Phonics

Assessments and lesson ideas to incorporate right away with any level of reader. The teachers I coach and I are using this practical resource to help close some learning gaps our students have this year (covid).This book was highly recommended to me, and I’ve used it daily since I got it.

I’m a retired elementary school teacher. I used Fountas and Pinnell guided reading in school but decided to try this to homeschool my granddaughter who is a first grader. It’s fantastic. It makes it easy to do lesson plans and the resources for the lessons are there except the individual leveled guided reading books. I’m very happy with this resource.

This phonics and word study book is an excellent book for my teachers, who have a few ELL students in the class. This book breaks down quick lessons for EL and ELL students, so less prep work for you! I spend 30 minutes a day with my ELLs, and this book has saved me prep time. The book is broken down into sounds with mini lessons to teach the student according to their needs.

Exactly what I wanted, tons of premade assessment and lesson plan forms, follows the levels from the companion book on guided reading. I have both of these now and feel fully prepared to deliver literacy to my Montessori elementary students. So glad I found this!

This is an invaluable resource for teachers who use Guided Reading groups in their classroom.

This is a must have if you are a primary teacher focusing on guided reading and also a Jan Richardson fan. This book gives you all the information and more that is relevant to getting readers to the next step in their reading. This is essentially an extension of the word study portion of Richardson's in her Next Steps to Guided Reading. Highly recommend for new teachers especially.

Love that this book breaks down word work components even further and gives multiple word work lessons you could do at each text level. Great resource!

I am a first grade teacher and I just received this book in my mailbox today. It is an amazing resource with tons of appropriate activities and ideas for each reading level. It includes assessments, sight word lists, word work ideas and more. I highly recommend this resource to educators looking for an appropriate and meaningful way to integrate word study and phonics work into their guided reading group instruction.

This book clearly describes a variety of specific ideas (and video links] for moving students forward by addressing key concepts such as phonological awareness, spelling patterns, and vocabulary. It’s a book that I will keep close by and refer to often when planning for word work lessons.

This text is invaluable in the classroom! I have revamped my whole word study program based on this book. Highly recommended to any teacher.
