Update to This is my third plexidor, fourth dog door
First dog door was a DIY cut a hole in a boarded up basement window and fashioned inside/outside flaps out of different materials until I found one the puppies didn't destroy in relatively warm Salt Lake City, UT. Next home in the relatively cold and snowy Northwoods of WI I bought a plexidor wall mount unit. Couldn't have been happier with it, as no random squirrels, mice, skunks, porcupines, meth makers or other riffraff got in, and the dogs like to stick their heads through and peek out of it now and then. Replaced the original one with a new one of a different color when I replaced the siding and trim on that house. I bought this door unit for my latest home on the definitely cold, windy and snowy south shore of Lake Superior (no place to put a wall mount door or I'd have tried to use the original one from the last home somehow, as they are pricey). Only problem I'm having is that as the dogs are approaching 13 years old, one of them is becoming reluctant to use it. However, that is not the fault of the actual door, but rather her back end becoming weak and it would be a problem with any door that doesn't open at ground level. I like that it is see through, if I keep it clean. They say not to use all sorts of cleaning products on it, but I find that what gets it clean without an hours work is Clorox wipes followed by water, and it hasn't seemed to cause lasting damage. But I don't clean it too often, so maybe regular use would cause damage, not sure. And maybe regular cleaning would make water more effective, lol. I like that you can screw the cover on to keep the dogs in if you need to. When one dog had knee surgery, we needed this for months. Locking it without the cover would just confuse them, so don't see the point in that function, other than it would be quicker to do that than put the cover on if you were taking the dogs out for the day and had security concerns or something like that. In subzero weather my second through the wall one got a bit frosty around the edges, and in general it leaked air, but probably not any more than any other dog door, and certainly a lot less than my homemade one, double flaps notwithstanding. The first one leaked and frosted less, so installation probably had something to do with it as well. I paid others to install all three of them. I made my original one myself, but for the money on these, I didn't want to screw it up. Too soon to tell as far as dealing with the cold weather goes with the door model, as we've been blessed with warm weather this year, with this weekend being the first bit of snow. It is no colder than in front of my windows at this very moment when I feel in front of the dog door, so it appears to be sealing better than the wall mount dog door so far. If it's bad later on, I'll update this. I've never gotten anything free and spent my hard earned money on all of these plexidors and everything else I've gotten on Amazon, so if I bother to review something, it's because I either really like it, or really don't like it. After a few years with this dog door, can say it really works for not leaking air when installed in a metal door, even when it's like -25 outside. There is more air leakage around the actual door itself than through/around the dog door. And no frosting like with my through the wall models in my other home. Total quality product!

Best pet door on the market
I have had dogs all my life, all rescues in various shapes, sizes and breeds. I have tried all kinds of pet doors and this door is by far the best I have ever used. I had a fifteen year old Beagle who could barely walk due to arthritis and used this door with ease. I have German Shepherd and a 120 pound mixed breed and they have gone in and out of this door at full speed for over a year and it has held up 100% to the abuse. Still closes tight and is quite. I built this door into a wall. You need to know a little carpentry to install it into a wall but overall installation was easy. If I knew how I'd upload a picture i would because it is a really nice looking door that blends into to the aesthetics of your home. The doors are plexi glass much nicer than a rubber flap and more durable. Just wipe them down with winded when needed. As long as these doors are available I'll never by another type of door.

This may last you forever
I have had this product since 2014. It has gone through 4 dogs ranging from 130 lbs. to 45 lbs. We live in the northeast, north of NYC. We see hot and cold weather. Have gone through countless other standard dog doors, including those that automatically open. All else have fallen apart usually within 6 months to 2 years at best. We usually have 2-3 dogs at a time from puppies up. This is the BEST door for large size dogs we've come across. The craftsmanship is unbelievably strong. I gave the energy efficient rating rather low because the flimsy weatherstripping that it comes with does fall apart with the hot/cold weather we get here and it is not sufficient to keep out the hot/cold air. For four season weather, it really is necessary to get the side rails to be able to easily slide the metal cover in place. Otherwise, you have to take the time to screw the plate in place, a bit of a pain. TIP- buy plastic hand star knobs. Easier than using regular screws. Take screws that fit to hardware store to get right size. We screw the plate in place only when we go away on vacation. Works really well. We also have a blanket hung on a tension rod on the door for really cold weather. We've done this with all our doggie doors. If your weather is pretty consistent, this is not an issue for you. The other issue is safety. This door has the BEST safety options we've come across. Like all dog doors, the large size is big enough for a slim person to enter but it is NOT easily done. Our houseguest forgot his keys and he got in, around 160 lb. He did not have an easy time, but he did get in. The door does have a key that locks just the doors from opening but for real safety, the plate is needed. This is a huge investment but at 75-100 easily spent on large size doors that don't last, it eventually pays for itself. If you have a petit size only dog, you probably don't have this issue but for a multi large dog family, it is invaluable. Make sure you install it where you absolutely want it because you will have it for a very long time.

Try the cheaper option
This is by far the most EXPENSIVE door on the market. The salon doors are better for noise and keeping the outside out. I appreciate the metal frame and the plexiglass doors aren't too hard to clean. My first door lasted me 7 years. The lock mechanism bent and got stuck along the way making the key useless. The door panel was popped out of the tracks and no longer slides. It was the spring in the door finally broking that was the last straw. With the door hanging open in the summer heat it had to be replaced. I see competitors on the market now for a 1/5 of the price... I should have gone with them. The inside panel slide into the old hole just fine, but the outside is 4 separate pieces that have to be aligned just right and you even have to DRILL into the product to install the guard at the top. Even being careful there are gaps. I forgot how hard this was to install, and how much caulk is needed to actually seal it to the door. Value for money: At the rate the last one broke it's still $100 per year in cost. Consider you need to buy the track for the door slide separately (an additional 125). The competition is in the (130-180) range. You only get a metal track with this company for the whole package from the other guys. Final Words: Looking back I regret my purchase, but I hope I remember that when this one breaks.

These doors are AMAZING. They are also Bull Terrier proof!
This is the 3rd PlexiDoor I have purchased and installed. Not because they have failed or worn out, but because I have moved and needed another one for my new house. The last one had 10 years use on it and was still going strong! Note: I have two English Bull Terriers, and even my Bullies cannot wear this thing out. That's quite a test of strength. These doors are weatherproof and what you spend on the door, you save ten times over on air conditioning and heat - their thermal quality is really impressive.

Nice but a few problems
This XL door was installed by my husband , who is a building contractor. He was disappointed that the template was not correct, so adjustments had to be made in the door hole. The bottom metal frame piece was also a little too short to match up. It works Ok , but not good esthetically. The door is easy to work for the Saint Bernard. It’s nice that the dog can see through the door. We’ve only had it installed for a week, so don’t know how durable it is. I think it is vastly overpriced.

Solid, dependable and secure option for "Let the dog in, Let the dog out."
Let's face it....no one wants to get up and down to open the door as much as dogs want to go in and out. That's why I now have two of these doors. They are durable, solid and securable, which means nothing goes in or out unless I want it to. I use the large sized one for my Lab / Goldie mix who's 85lbs, but the swinging saloon style doors are easily operated by my 15lbs terrier mix too. It gets really cold where I live, these doors conserve heat by operating efficiently and sealing well too. Can't say enough good things about them. Sure they cost serious money and are a bit complex to install, but once in - they last. I know people who have gone through three sets of flaps and my first door still looks and works like new three years later. That encouraged to install a second door to give my dogs options for getting out to our yard. We have bears in the neighborhood and I like that I can lock the door and have confidence that I won't get any unwanted visitors and the metal bolt in panel allows me to secure the opening completely if I have to leave town for the weekend. Yeah, the cost will cause you to think twice, but if you do it = you won't regret buying and installing this great product. Your dogs will love you for it

PlexiDor dog door does not offer any real security when combined with the side rails.
First, this product is on the high end of mechanical (non electric) dog doors and for the money, the quality, fit and finish should be better. The other shocking aspect to adding the sliding track, besides an additional $90 to the already high price, it doesn't really provide security. The security plate was originally designed to be screwed into the frame, which would make the 1/16 sheet metal somewhat resistant to entry. With the addition of the sliding track rails, all bets are off. The so called "security plate" slops around the the inside of the rails, while convenient, it provides no security whatsoever. Because the rails have so much slop and the security plate is so thin, any pressure (think foot, or hard push from an arm) the plate deflects, disengages from the track and the intruder would be in. The bottom exterior rail is cut longer than the side rails are wide, so overhangs a bit on each side. The thickness of material of the exterior bottom and top rain rails are different from the frame so they don't mate up seamlessly, which for this kind of money, they should. The Security plate has a pre-drilled hole that is supposed to align with the locking mechanism of the dog door, sadly it doesn't, again fit and finish is poorly executed, making it next to impossible to lock/unlock the door once the security plate is inserted into the side rails. I do like the fact that my dog learned to use the door within 15 minutes of it being installed. The quiet entry and exit and relatively good seal it provides from bugs and heat/cold is superior to a single flap door. I understand replacement parts are available, should the need arise in the future, which is always a plus. If the company is going to call this a security plate, then either the side rails have to have tighter tolerances to the plate provided, or the thickness of the plate should be increased to 1/8", or both. $500 for a mechanical dog door (door and rail cost combined) is a bit extreme, especially when it doesn't provide the security it is purported to offer. I also believe that attention to detail was not a priority when having this item manufactured, which is a disappointment.
