I bought these beans to make my own baked beans so that I'd know what has gone into them The packaging says that they do not need to be soaked overnight so I followed the cooking instructions. After the initial boil followed by simmering for over an hour they still had too much bite for my taste. I left them in the cooking water overnight and by the following morning they had absorbed more of the cooking liquid and had softened a little more. With fried onion, garlic, paprika and tinned chopped tomatoes they made good baked beans. I still have half the bag left and, when I make the next lot of beans, I plan to soak the beans overnight with a small amount of baking soda. Having read up on cooking beans, the baking soda should make them a bit more 'mushy.' I'll update this review when I know how that works out. I will buy these beans again.

For beans to soften they need to be relatively “fresh”. I soaked these beans in bottled water to ensure that the hard water in the U.K. would not impact them. They still have a crunch to them even after being cooked long enough that they have split. I was hoping since this brand sells on Amazon that it would have enough turnover to ensure relatively young beans. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. I will not be wasting 24 hours of intense cooking on this sellers beans again.
