SmartCat All Natural Clumping Cat Litter, 20 Pound (320oz 1 pack) - Alternative to Clay and Pellet Litter - Chemical and 99% Dust Free - Unscented and Lightweight

This litter is super lightweight and easy to scoop. Perfect for hands that are sore with arthritis! It is dust free. It clumps urine hard and dries out fecal material (poop) so well that waste is minimal - even stays together in firm clump when my one cat pees along the litterbox wall and clump comes free from wall without extra effort. This is the best of any litter I have ever used in my 30 years of owning cars and working in kennels and vet hospitals!! Truly! But there is a trade off. I wanted unscented (and used unscented scoopable clay litter too), and this litter is scent-free except for a subtle kind of woody smell when first poured into the box. The downside is that is does not absorb odors aa well so some days, I know when one of the cats has used the box because it smells. This is getting better as I find the best diet for my cats though (their poop has less smell so less smell to block). I have one covered and one uncovered litterbox and the smell is an issue with both equally I think. I am sure if I left it, the grass litter would dry the poop up great and the smell with it...but I can't stand to try it so I scoop right away when it happens, which is only occasionally. This is why I gave it 3 stars for scent. Not sure there is an answer to this without adding unnatural scents and/or dustiness to the litter - which are both worse in my opinion. Mixing some clay litter in is an option (see rest of review below) but I quit because of the negatives with this option. The clay litter just gets kind of sticky and is so heavy. They track both of the litters just as much I think. The grass litter is much easier to sweep or vacuum up even if it gets into a wet spot on the floor before I get to it. The grass litter seems to get trapped by the mats I have the litterboxes on better than the clay litter did. I included photos of my most recent set up and it is the least amount of litter tracked beyond the mats yet! My cats switched to this grass litter easily. I mixed in 1/4 or so of this new litter with their old litter. I had used Tidy Cat Clumping Unscented litter for years - all of my oldest 7 year old cat and for 12 years before that. As I scooped, I only added the new grass litter in as I needed more until the boxes were totally grass litter. On the 2nd litter box, I went from 1/2 or so straight to all grass litter with no issue (But be careful trying this - a picky cat might have balked and avoided the box because of this.) Two of my cats still prefer the Tidy Cat litter because they will use the litterbox with some of the Tidy Cat in it if I make it available (I had to experiment - pi ture 3 is a mix of litters) but all of the cats use the all grass litterbox some still even with Tidy Cat in their other box. Most importantly, they are perfectly willing to use the litterboxes fully and without issue with just grass litter in them both. As for brand, I tried this brand, one other grass litter brand (Both chosen for first trial by cost and good reviews.) and a crushed walnut shell litter. The other grass litter was more dusty - not good for my cats or my allergies - and I think I may be allergic to walnuts. The walnut shell litter had a noticeable nutty smell (not bad, just noticeable) and minimal dust despite better odor control...but my eyes itched and watered and my skin started itching after changing and scooping the boxes. This stopped again once all the walnut litter was gone. So this grass litter is all I buy now. I am going to order a couple of round, from the top litterboxes made by a start up company that are designed to work best with this kind of litter. Maybe the litterbox design will help with the occasional "stinky poop" issue. Just the lack of dust and ease of scooping due to superior clumping and lightweightness of the litter seal the deal for me. I am 6 months or so in to the switch and not planning to ever go back. I have 3 cats and two litterboxes. I try to scoop daily but have gone a week a couple of times and all of the above still held true. That was never the case with the scoopable clay litter. (Note: One litterbox per cat is the ideal but seems to be ok for us. I will post again if and when I get new litterboxes.) Quick additional note - The two bags for my subscribe & save order arrived this time with holes in them! The outside box was fine so don't think it was a delivery issue. One bag's hole was a slice and had a red heavy sticker over it so damage clearly occurred pre-shipment. The sticker had come mostly unstuck though so litter was spilled out in the box. I am in contact with Amazon and expect they will make it right. This is the 1st time I had issues with a litter shipment. Not an issue with litter itself but I am honestly not sure if this brand of litter is available elsewhere, such as through Chewy or local pet stores, so if Amazon handling becomes a recurring issue and they are the only source, this could be a negative.)

I've been using this cat litter for several years, so it's time for a review. These things take time ya know! I've tried most of the other of the cat litters for my master, and this one is the best, hands down. I don't use clay litter, as it is bad for cats. This one is made in USA from non-gmo grass. It clumps great and if you scoop it out of the litter box a couple times a day, there is no smell. Fragrance free, so no chemicals there. Also, very little dust. It will track just a little bit. but you can control that by placing a small towel in front of the litter box. All in all, I am completely satisified with this cat litter.

this litter sand despite being 20lbs is so light which shocked me. i opened it and it is so fine and smells like oats!!!!! my cat used it hours later and it was so easy to clean. it clumps well and it didnt stink at all when i scooped the pee clumps like other litters ive bought! def staying with this one

We were looking for alternatives to dangerous clay cat litter. Do your research and discover why it's dangerous to cats. We tried corn cat litter but it did not hide the stink. This grass seed cat litter works well. Its not perfect but it's better than the other 5 cat litters we tried. It clumps very well, sealing the pee and poop. There is almost no dust to endanger cats or humans inhaling it. It tracks a little bit but nothing like other litters we tried. Best of all it keeps the cat smells to a minimum. It has almost no smell except a slight smell of grass. You cant get more natural than that. It's soft to touch and our cat likes it. It is the best we have used and we are going to keep using it.

Before I ever used Smart Cat, I pet sat for some beautiful rescue cats whose owner was a committed user of this product. It was highly recommended to me that if I ever got cats, this was the product I wanted to use. A few years later, I did just that and didn't hesitate to order the same product I'd used pet sitting. Several years later, the product quality was the same high quality as when I'd tried it the first time. I used it for a couple of years before Covid. Unfortunately, there came a point when we couldn't readily get it, so I shopped where I could and picked up a popular brand name clay version in a local grocery store. Bad news! I hadn't even considered the harm it could have done. In not too much time, my cat started wheezing and sneezing. I had never heard him sneeze previously and hadn't considered that it could have been the litter. After all, it's made for cat boxes! I'd also kept him as an indoor cat from the first day I found him. It wasn't too long before I also started coughing and feeling a dry scratchiness in my lungs and throat. One day, I went into the bathroom and saw a noticeable layer of what I thought was dust on the top of the tank and bathroom shelf. I'm generally very clean, so I got out my rags and started dusting. It wasn't dust. As I looked around the house, that "dust" wasn't anywhere else to be found - only in the bathroom where I kept the cat's litter box. I realized it was clay silt from the Covid kitty litter we'd picked up when we couldn't get Smart Cat. I'd picked up several jugs of it at the time, not knowing how long Covid would last. Cat litter is one of those things that you want to keep a good supply of on-hand! By that time I was able to order Smart Cat again, so I did right away and dumped the rest of the clay litter I'd picked up as soon as Smart Cat arrived. We had no more "dust" after that, and in less than a week, we were both back to normal. I will not use any other brand or type of cat litter except Pioneer Pet Smart Cat grass seed litter. It's a great product that keeps the cat's box odor-free. I clean the box after my cat's every use. I've been in people's homes before where you can smell "cat" as soon as you enter the door, but not with Smart Cat! I order the large value-sized bag. I pour it into a smaller pourable jug (using a funnel so it doesn't fly away) and keep it by his box. I pour the rest out of the bag into a 5-gallon bucket and with a snap-on lid on until we need to fill the jug again. So easy! When he goes potty, I scoop it right away into a small bag and tie it shut. At the end of the day, the bags go into the trash can outside. You would never know I have a cat! I will say that it does track a bit, but I keep a small, hand-sized brush and dustpan near the litter box. When I'm scooping, I just give the surrounding area a quick sweep. I also have one of those rubber litter-catching mats on the floor as he comes out of the box. It all helps to keep the tracking down. I also find that if I keep the box clean each time he goes, that I actually don’t use as much litter because I rarely need to empty the whole box. Consistent cleanliness saves on the cost! Pioneer Pet recently changed their packaging. I was concerned that I'd gotten the wrong product and called the company. They were very kind and explained the packaging change was for visual consistency when you see all of their products side-by-side. They guaranteed me that no changes had been made to the product. Peace of mind! I would highly recommend Smart Cat. I use about 2 - 4 bags/year depending on if I'm traveling or not. If so, then I'll take a larger jug and use that with a disposable litter box, covered with a plastic kitchen bag when not in use. I pull it in and out of hotel bathrooms without a fuss, and we've always left a clean room behind. No complaints! I would highly recommend Pioneer Pet Smart Cat grass seed cat litter!

I love this litter! It is exactly what I was looking for: lightweight, no added fragrance, and an unbelievable ability to remove all waste cleanly. I can't imagine any need to change all the litter at one time. Let me explain further... I've been on a quest for a good, lightweight litter for years! We've always had cats, and for many years, I was willing to schlep the 42 pound bags of Costco litter because of the low cost. However, as my husband and I grew older, and after my diagnosis of MS, we both realized the weight of the used litter became unmanageable. In the past several years I've tried Arm and Hammer (too heavy and quite dusty), Tidycats (regular is heavy and the light is a disaster), World's Best (I've renamed it World's Worst), and Fresh and Light (not the Red Cap) that worked for us for years. 25% lighter was better than nothing, but the carbon greedy green jugs are not recyclable in our area, and the boxes were heavy. I recently tried Pretty Litter, and I can see a use for it to monitor a cat's health. However, one bag for one cat for one month just does not work! Think of your cat peeing in the same litter over and over and over for 30 days. I made three weeks before the smell just became impossible. I can't remember how I heard about Smart Cat, but I know I didn't find it at first on Amazon. I just checked and it doesn't appear until page 4 in the listings. I was willing to try anything, and as I said earlier, I am thrilled with the results. The 20lb. bag is HUGE, and I actually ran my hands through the litter after I put it in the box; the texture felt the same as Fresh and Light. Yes, it does track some, but I've found other litters that are much worse, and it's certainly something I am willing to live with for all the other added benefits. I love how the urine forms such a hard ball that it lifts out cleanly, leaving no residue whatsoever. Once you remove the urine and feces, there is nothing left in the box other than the litter, and I do mean nothing. After four days of use and a cleaning of the box, I actually got down and smelled the box (Yeah, I know, that is gross; I did it so you don't have to), and I smelled...NOTHING! I was amazed! I have two litter-robots, and I've feeling confident this litter will work great and won't leave "remnants" like Fresh and Light, remnants that mean a cleaning of the box every so often. That's my hope. :) Update March 15: Day 10 of use. Still no smell from the litter! I've also found it works well for my cat that has occasional "pooping" issues. One of our older rescues has periodic loose stools, and this litter works great to clump the poop for easy removal. I just couldn't be happier. Update March 24: Three weeks of use, and I'm still very impressed! Lifting out the urine and poo clumps is extremely easy, and literally every scrap is removed. Once again, I still get no smell from the litter once the waste is removed. The only downfall is it does track some, so if this is a biggy in your life, you won't want this litter. I keep a small stick vacuum nearby, and a quick pass whisks it away. I'm one happy camper! I'll be trying in the my Litter-robot's next.

I really wanted to like this litter because it was great at the start. The clumping is exceptional, with urine forming super hard clumps that didn't break apart or stick to the litter boxes. There was zero urine smell and it also eliminated any poop smell because it worked great at desiccating any moisture in their feces. It lasts a long time and is very cost-effective, especially for multiple cat households. It has no artificial scents, which my allergies and the cats's noses appreciate greatly. I also like that it is biodegradable and lighter than the corn litter we used to use. It does track a little, but it was similar to pine and corn litters. Unlike the corn litter, this stuff didn't leave little dusty paw prints all over everything. Definitely a plus. However, we had to discontinue using it (and the reason for knocking off two stars) is because it is not a litter that can be left unscooped for even one day. We have odd working schedules and sometimes have to stay elsewhere overnight. When we get home the following evening, there is a really strange and unpleasant smell coming from the litter boxes. I didn't think much of it until we spent a three days away visiting family and came home to what I can only describe as the Grim Reaper's toilet after spicy chili night. Scooping the boxes required filter masks stuffed with peppermint-dosed cotton balls in order to survive the experience and we had to take turns when it got overwhelming. It was a bit of a stomach-churning smell, which is not an insignificant complaint since we once lived in a house that would fill with sewer gas every night. In spots where the cats had peed a few times (a couple of the cats insist on peeing in one corner because they're cats), the litter had started to adhere to the boxes. It wasn't like wet crumbles we got with other litters, it was more like putty or clay that had hardened solid. It took a good bit of scraping to clean the corners. We decided to keep with it because the litter was otherwise amazing and worth the occasional visit from Death himself. However, a couple months later, we both came down with the Martian Death Flu and for a few days, were barely able to haul ourselves a few steps away to our own bathroom, much less across the house to scoop the litter boxes. It took about a week for us to gain the strength to do physical labor as intensive as scooping the boxes and by then, our old friend the Grim Reaper had returned with several dozen of his best friends for the world's most terrifying chili cook-off. The stench was indescribable and traumatic to our still-sensitive stomachs. Thanks to the air currents, the smell hadn't wafted into the bedroom until the last couple days, but half the house was so stinky, it gave us flashbacks to the sewer gas house. We had to have a friend come help us and I half suspect he moved to another state so he could get away from helping us in the future. Keep in mind, none of these horrible smells were cat urine smells. There was absolutely ZERO typical urine or ammonia smell. The smell was coming from the litter itself. I'm not sure what it is about how they make this stuff--whether it's the grass seed as it decomposes in contact with urine or how they treat it, but the smell was more like something fleshy was profusely rotting. As my partner put it, it was "piping hot garbage." Urine smell I can handle, even the smell when one of our cats vomits up her freshly eaten meal to inform us that she hated it. I can't even imagine how horrible it was for our poor cats! To make matters worse, any spot a cat had peed in where the urine and litter mixture touched the litter box bottoms and sides was dried on so hard, it was like it had been baked on. We scraped the boxes within an inch of their lives, even soaked them in varying combinations of hot water and increasingly harsh cleaners. In the end, we had to throw all the boxes away and get new ones because we couldn't get it all off. We wash our boxes regularly and have never had a litter not come off easily with some hot water and plain dish soap. Of course, the litter boxes being left unscooped for so long is our fault entirely, but it highlights why we just can't use this litter anymore. If we have an emergency and can't scoop, have to be gone overnight for work, or even want to spend a weekend at the beach, this litter is going to be a nightmare to come home to. Granted, we have four cats, but we also have five under-bed storage totes that we use as litter boxes. They're huge and give the cats plenty of room if we have to be gone for a few days or otherwise can't scoop. We hire pet sitters when we know in advance we'll be gone a long time, but we should be able to leave the litter boxes for a couple days if we need to without Death coming by for a visit. This has never been a problem with any other litter we've used; clay, crystal, corn, pine pellets, pine sawdust, walnut, and the Breeze system. If the stench and litter box ruining issues are taken care of, I'll happily return to this litter. Until then, it's back to the pine litter. My partner just came in and asked me what I was reviewing. I said "The grass litter. Remember, the one that--?" and he said "Yeah." before I even finished. It's been over six months since we stopped using it and the memories are that fresh.

The only litter I get for my cats now. Zero dust, zero fragrance!! Has a very light natural woody scent but only if you're close to it when refilling/cleaning the litterbox. Clumps better than clay too imo and lasts about the same amount of time. A little expensive but worth it for my cats + my health. Better for the planet too. Only con is that since the pieces are small and light, it's very trackable and I can't use a litter mat (my cat thinks it's just an extension of the litter box 🤦🏼‍♀️). Nbd to sweep or run the robot vacuum once a day. I wish pet stores around me would carry this!

have been trying to find an alternative to the good fine clay clumping litter I have been using as getting to heavy for me and also wanted something more environmental friendly. Have tried, wood,silicone, corn and walnut but either my cats would not use or the clumps fell apart. Discovered this litter on amazon ( but difficult to find even with the exact title) thought I would give it a try. Well,it's lovely and fine and soft for cats paws , not dusty. really light to handle. and has no smell . even after the cats use it if they don't cover quick enough, they can't find were they peeed! it clumps into a rubbery clumps which holds together so easy to remove. I just shake the litter tray and they come to the surface and be picked out . ( no experience of poo as my cats only pee inside but go out to poo. ) The only down side of this litter is the price which I expect is because it comes from American. just hoping that some pet company will buy in bulk so we can get cheaper and easier in the UK. highly recommend

We’ve had great success with this cat litter! My cat readily uses the litter box, which is always a top priority. It’s truly dust-free, which is a major plus for us — 5 stars on that front. The litter clumps well, making cleanup easier, though I’ve noticed some small pieces tend to break off. These smaller pieces can be tricky to scoop with a traditional cat litter scooper, as most have spaces that are too large. I’ve started using a skimmer spoon with smaller holes to catch these smaller pieces. While we haven’t found the perfect size yet, it’s been an improvement. We really like the natural scent of the litter. The scent actually makes scooping enjoyable. It does a solid job of controlling odours, though we should note that we scoop the litter box daily (sometimes even up to four times a day) because keeping it clean for our fur baby is very important to us. One downside is that, due to its small particle size and lightweight nature, the litter tends to track quite a bit. A good-quality litter mat is absolutely essential. Overall, very pleased with this litter, and despite a few minor adjustments, we recommend it for its dust-free quality, odour control, and clumping ability!

Honestly I don't get the negative reviews -- I literally buy this from Amazon so I can do a review here! To be fair, I once talked to a PetValu staff who seemed to be very knowledgable and told me that just like human, we're what we eat and the same goes to the cats: so each cat would have totally different PH value and different things in the urine which ultimately resulted in the clump-ability of different litters. However that being said, after having used literally pretty much all the brands and all types of litter in the market (seriously, all of them! because I have a very finicky cat who would pee on the floor left you scratch your head off not understanding why!), this is really by far the best litter that I've ever tried, period! If it's all possible, I would give it 6 stars! I only have two cats, but it's 2 of 2 "kitty approved" :) Both of them love it better than any other type and brand. It clumps really well -- seriously, you don't see any other litter company does the same demo like SmartCat by throwing a clumped litter like a ball and see how well it holds. Also it covers the smell really, really well. In the past, especially when we have heat alerts, my bathroom tends to have some sour leftover food type of garbage smell with the other natural based litter. But with this, even with the heat wave this year, my bathroom is perfectly fine! And really, there is no dust. -- does it track? Of course! I haven't come across ANY litter that my cats weren't capable of tracking; seriously, zero brand or product! But with SmartCat it's tolerable and also when you step on it, it won't hurt and you won't feel like you're living at your beach house. Seeing is believing! -- I attach a few pictures to showcase how well it clumps and how little it tracks (and for my other cat who doesn't like to cover his pee or poop, the tracking is far less with my unique litter pan here!!) Yes it's on the pricy side, but it really worth of every penny. I used to use the other famous brand of corn based litter, but now I'm a hardcore fan of SmartCat. I just wish I had come across that YouTube commercial and review much earlier and it would save me years of trouble with my litter problems!!

This litter is amazing! I wanted to introduce it slowly to my cats to prevent any accidents, so I filled one litter box with their old litter (World's Best) and one litter box with this SmartCat litter. The SmartCat litter smells significantly less and clumps way better so you avoid accidentally breaking up the urine clumps which is the main reason the litter box starts to stink. With the old litter I would scoop daily and had to completely empty, wash box, and replace with new litter about once every 3 - 4 weeks. This SmartCat litter has been going strong for nearly 6 weeks, and still looks and smells the same as the day I poured it from the bag! It might be a little more expensive than you're used to, but you'll have to buy at least half as much. I highly recommend this litter to anyone with cats, especially those with small apartments and multiple cats like me. Edit: I can get this litter at a local pet supply store for over 50% cheaper ($45 with tax), so I recommend you checkout out the SmartCat website to see if it's available near you before buying from amazon
