A quantitative introduction to the Solar System and planetary systems science for advanced undergraduate students, this engaging new textbook explains the wide variety of physical, chemical, and geological processes that govern the motions and properties of planets. The authors provide an overview of our current knowledge and discuss some of the unanswered questions at the forefront of research in planetary science and astrobiology today. They combine knowledge of the Solar System and the properties of extrasolar planets with astrophysical observations of ongoing star and planet formation, offering a comprehensive model for understanding the origin of planetary systems. The book concludes with an introduction to the fundamental properties of living organisms and the relationship that life has to its host planet. With more than 200 exercises to help students learn how to apply the concepts covered, this textbook is ideal for a one-semester or two-quarter course for undergraduate students.

use the graduate version instead
I took an undergraduate Comparative Planetology class as a graduate student. The professor originally listed the graduate version of this book (Planetary Sciences) on the syllabus, and then changed his mind and had us buy this version instead. I already bought the grad version and read a bit of it, and I thought it was a lovely book. This is pretty much just a neutered version of that one. For an upper-level undergraduate course or graduate-level course, I would recommend Planetary Sciences instead. It's more detailed and the flow of the writing is better.

Fantastic textbook for advanced students
Very detailed and in depth, definately not a book for beginners! By crikey it weighs a ton! This is a perfect complement to the astrophysics and advanced maths I am currently studying.

Excellent Text for introduction into the Planetary Science
The book gives an fine overview on the Basics of planetary science. It also covers the "new" field of extrasolar Systems. It is easy to read and has a lot of Pictures and Diagrams. - The only short cut is that most Pictures are black and White and sometimes it Needs some efforts to double check the colour discription in the text to the writings of the Pictures.

Great book
Good introductory book to planetary sciences. Used in MSc planetary sciences course instructed by the co-author Imke de Pater.

That's a great book
It's a good reading for undergraduated students or master students that beginning in planetary sciences. This book with Planetary Science (same author) create a solid basis.
