Great for kids learning basic map & compass skills
Bought several to teach our Federation of North-American Explorers group orienteering. This is a good basic compass. - A little big for the younger boys to easily hold in 1 hand comfortably but good for older boys, adults, etc. - The lanyard is a nice-to-have to avoid having to hold or put in pockets when you want it close by but don't need it at the moment. - Helpful to measure distances on a map, to enhance the value of learning the map-and-compass skill by the boys. - The display is easy to read, and the needle is fully colored Red to point North (vs. just a dot on some other compasses I have seen). - Does not handle declination, but that was beyond the scope of our lessons. - Watch-out!! Slow to get it accurate as the needle moves a lot before settling. Also sensitive to other magnetic items and may not be a perfect read. I have recommended that each of our boys buy 1 of these for their day pack as one of the "Ten Essentials of Hiking!" A good item to have handy at a good price.

Do not purchase...highly inaccurate
Very inaccurate, I purchased this to teaching an orienteering class, the compass is nice and comes with quite a bit of features, but the needle is very inaccurate and does not rotate appropriately. Further there is not leveling bubble. I would HIGHLY recommend you avoid this product, it is 100% not usable for navigation. Now I do understand you get what you pay for and these were cheap, but my main focus was teaching, and I couldn't even teach with these.

Perfect for scouts, all were accurate out of the box
I picked these up for use with my Cub Scouts. First thing I did when the package arrived was sit all of them next to each other. They spin, wobble and hit North. All of them were pointing to the same spot and within 2 degrees of North. They have shown no issues so far. I let my son play with one for a while and he liked the weight and size; and the magnifying section with the measuring markers so he can learn map orienteering this summer. Update, after getting to use them myself I found that 1 was liquid filled and 5 were not. 1 of the 5 seems to move less free than the other 4 without liquid but is still usage for Scouting. The liquid one is silky smooth. I will contact the company about the lack of liquid and see what happens.

Good for the money
These are inexpensive, decent compasses. I used them to teach orienteering to a group of children and they worked well for that. The needle got stuck on a few of them occasionally, but you could shake them and get it on track. I wouldn't actually carrry one of these, but they were fine for what we needed.

Good for intended use.
Purchased for kids to have and keep for use in a class merit.

Not very accurate
They are OK, good for the price but I feel like usually they’re not giving me accurate readings. I tested a couple times and it usually just feels a little bit off. If you’re looking for a precise would not recommend.

Poor accuracy on 50% of the units
One star is the lowest rating; I'd prefer zero. Of 6 units, 3 have needles that do not move freely. The housing is pretty. I passed these out to a geometry class intending to teach circles/360. They point different directions. I cal'd them against an older, excellent compass, 3 awful; 3 fair to good. Needle response is not good on any. Maybe items where reliability is critical should be bought elsewhere. If these are a toy for the kids, OK. For orienteering & education, no.

A gift for a bunch of ARES people.
These are great, reasonably priced, simple but has eveything you need for navigation around a map. Light weight, but will stand up to rough treatment. Nice equipment.
