Gears of War Ascendance No-Spoiler Review.
This novel takes place after the events of Gears of War 4, and serves as a bridging story to Gears 5. Minister Jinn still doesnt believe that the Locust are back and she wants proof. We see how the Swarm force has turned into an insurmountable force and why our heroes go their own ways. The book, since the first chapter, is filled with pure adrenaline. Skirmishes against the Swarm are peppered throughout the beginning of the novel. First Act is the calm before the storm. But it is packed with interesting tidbits about our new characters in the franchise as well as old ones. And after the First Act all hell breaks lose. We see more action. More destruction. More heartache. The writer, Jason M. Hough, does an amazing job utilizing the characters and their traits. Every word spoken feels true to that character. Every action taken as well.I dont want to give anything away but not only do the Gears fight in close quarters and resort to last minute decisions. But the adrenaline that I felt in some of the later parts of the book made me continue on reading. And the Last Stand was amazingly written to give you enough points of views that it felt like a description of a movie battle scene. As to comparing it to other books in the Gears of War saga this one stands tall. I prefer this one above all the books that Karen Traviss wrote. I will say that this one compares more to Anvil's Gate in the way that it sets up an amazing firefight at the end.All in all a great read for Gear fans, and an amazing Sci-Fi book. Totally recommend it!

A Great Prequel to Gears 5 Story
This novel takes place right after the events of Gears of War 4, and serves as the bridging story to Gears 5. Minister Jinn still doesnt believe that the Locust are back and she wants proof. We see how the Swarm force has turned into an insurmountable force and why our heroes go their own ways this is my first Gears book and I must say I am impressed. And the Last Stand was amazingly written to give you enough points of views that it felt like a description of a movie battle scene. All in all a great read for Gear fans, and an amazing Sci-Fi book. Totally recommend it! I look forward to reading the other Gears books.

Solid book - lots of filler.
First, I want to say that this book is very well written. I enjoyed the story, and cruised through it in two days. The reason I'm giving it only 4 stars is because there just seemed to be a lot of filler and not much content. What I mean by that is, lots of the book is focusing on small battles/scurmishes, but by the end of the book you don't feel like you've really learned that much. I understand that it is supposed to be that way in some respects obviously leading into the game coming out in September, but by the end of the book I was left with the "That's it?" feeling. I felt like there should have been more included to make the book really stand out. As it stands, it seems like it is just missing something. If you're a serious gears fan though, you should definitely read it. Just don't expect too many revelations, because they are not there.

Enjoyable read as a primer for Gears 5
I've ready all the other books so was looking forward to this one which picks up after the events of Gears 4 and leads into the events of Gears 5.I have to say I prefer how this book reads chapter to chapter. The former author of Gears books, K. Traviss had her style which for the most part switched between some flashback story and then current events story. This author, J. Hough (at least in this book) keeps the story current events only. I think I prefer this approach better, there were times in the Traviss books where the current events story was getting good, you hit the chapter end and then the next chapter's gone back to the flashback storyline being told. So i'd skip that chapter and go to the next one to keep the current events story rolling. So i'm much preferring the Hough approach to story telling in Ascendance and look forward to hopefully reading more of his stories in the Gears universe if he does any more.If you're a Gears fan looking forward to Gears 5, i highly recommend you give Ascendance a read.

Great quality book, amazing story.
The book itself is very high quality and well-made.The story is honestly so captivating and I never like to stop reading. After I stop it feels as if I just watched a Gears movie or something. It’s very well written and the characters/dialogue are exactly as they should be. The writer completely knows what he’s doing. My book came in an envelope too and I was a bit surprised as to why they’d ship it like that, mine was fine but I hope the guy who gave it 1 star for that would re-write the review. I’m sure Amazon would have accommodated him anyway. The review is for the product, don’t give the author/company bad ratings for their product because of what Amazon did (always does :/ )I saw the book had 3 stars and was appalled and confused until I saw it was because of a shipping issue.

Loved it
Gears of war was the first game to hook me. I have thoroughly enjoyed the characters, world and fantastic storytelling across all its media. This book is another great addition. Can't wait for the next game and hopefully more books to continue the journey.

Great Prequel to Gears 5
I was weary of a new writer since I have all of the gears books by Karen Traviss. However Jason M. Hough has proven me wrong. This is a great read and a serious page turner. I knew i was hooked after the first chapter. I hope that he writes more for the series and I will definitely get those too.

Really good !
It's a bit long winded in places and there are typo's that somehow made it to print in my copy but it just happends a few times. The story feels short and incomplete, but does have well written action scenes and sticks to the characters throughout the franchise, also throws in a line about how anya and marcus could have jd when anya was unable to have kids.It leaves some things in the open for the game for example jd's 'injured arm' shown in the teasers from e3 doesn't happen in this book, the book could have had it happen but nope, so it's either going to be a thing in the game / flashback or just like other things is never explained or has been retconned / changed. It also explains what happens to oscar and the village.

Agreat Gears novel, clearly written by a true Gears fan and with lots of support from the powers that be behind the series.
The events connect nicely with all what we saw in Gears 4, and even build on tiny details such as names of people or places that were casually mentioned in the game at some point: Settlement 2, South Village, or the twins, just to mention a few examples. The novel as a whole also fits perfectly within the Gears universe and with what we know so far about Sera, its territories and cities, and clearly focuses on introducing us to the events we will experience in Gears 5. I’m betting the village mentioned by the end of the novel is the one we saw in the world premiere trailer from E32018. From the events in the novel it is also easy to take a guess at who the fallen person is that Kait is mourning at in the trailer. There are other little details, easy to be missed, but that a true Gearhead will dearly appreciate: someone holding a fallen beam, someone else ducking under it, then that second person holding it for the first person to pass. A simple action, that immediately reminds you of the interactive cut scenes so common in the games. Accurate descriptions of well-known weaponry, armor, enemies and tactics also make you immediately remember that this is a Gears story we are talking about. Hell, there’s even a cool explanation of the logic behind active reloads!Hugh as taken over from Karen Traviss’s previous novels in a fantastic way. I’m really hoping this is the first of a whole new series of Gears of War books. One focusing on Col. Hoffman and Hivebuster Team Scorpio would be awesome.
