D-Day: A Photographic History of the Normandy Invasion

Superlative cliches fail to describe it....
I would be giving this one the five full stars even if Marty Morgan and I haven't known each other from various historical presentations for seven or eight years now. I was actually Marty's back-up slide flipper when he presented some elements of this work at the 2014 NRA Annual Meeting as "The Guns of D-Day Part II".Anyone with any interest in the Normandy landings has seen some of these pictures before. Marty's genius was to go back to the original negatives in many cases, blow them up bigger, and think about them. Let me explain a perfect example of this. There's a pic of 2nd Division men marching in from Omaha after the landings. It's a known pic. It was the cover of a 1990s paperback edition of Keegan's "The Second World War" that I have had since college. But looking more closely at it, why are a battalion's worth of frontline infantrymen in a M1 Garand-equipped army all carrying M1903 Springfields instead? Marty has found the answer and it is in the book. Repeat that dedication to lost details hundreds of times over, and you have the effort that it took for Marty to assemble "The Americans At D-Day".I don't know if this book could have been done twenty years ago. The book is a large enough format to display the photos well, and modern digital printing brings out the detail. The devil really was in the details this time around, and the details are what makes this book worth every cent.Marty, I'll see you in Nashville in '15 and you're signing this one for me.

Masterpiece! Perfect for any history buff!
I’m already loving this book! My 14 year old daughter is also enjoying the wonderful pictures and is now more interested in history. I’ve already downloaded Mr. Morgan’s book Americans on Dday also. It’s clear that a lot of research and thought was put into the making of this book. I can’t believe that I got it for under $7 definitely going to order a copy for my daughter. Ok I have now purchased my third book! Everyone wants one!

Normandy veteran loved it
I sent this book to my father-in-law for his 100th birthday. He was the captain of a landing craft during D-Day. I was not able too look at it myself as we were unable to travel during the pandemic, but he loved it.

Excellent volume for a reference guide, or to view on occasion.
Very accurate description of a very memorable military/historical reference. Very detailed, and shows the events/details of the landings from both the Allies and from the Germans.

Nothing out there quite like it outside photo archives
I bought this book out of general interest in finding archive images and a specific interest in the photographic unit of the US Coast Guard. It delivers on all counts - large format, images well printed, and a rannge of really interesting images right through D-Day. Mostly US units in shot, unsurprisingly, but some fascinating colour images of the English south coast with troops preparing and boarding.
