Madeleine Takes Command

Great Historical Fiction of a Very Real Girl
I read this book with my 10 year old son for his world history course. I really enjoyed the story of brave Madeleine and the lessons we can learn from her character and how she commanded her brothers and a weak force to hold up a fort against the threat of an Iroquois attack in the early-ish days of New France (Canada). I think this is a great story to read with children and talk about what was going on in history and the fighting between the people groups. It was a great middle grade book and major bonus points that this girl really lived and really was able to hold up the fort with most of their men having been captured.

Mom got me this book
This historical novel fills in a piece of the American history experience and Canada's background. It was a nice continuation of a book I read about Samuel de Champlain. I thoroughly enjoyed this book because it painted vivid images of what life must have been like about three hundred years ago in New France. Many parts of daily life, survival in a primitive world and what threatened their existence are found in the conversations of the characters. The main character Madeleine heroically faces problems from both external threats and taking care of the problems between her siblings especially the ones who were prejudice; she is the voice of reason. I think this book was also great because it had Christian world view. Finally reading it aloud to my mom was a helpful vocabulary study.

Very slow
It's great to have a book about this part of North American history, but it's a pretty boring book. It's about three young kids and one old man that hold off a suspected Mowhawk raid of their French fort. There isn't a lot of action, but you keep reading to find out what happened. Impressive heroism of young kids, but still very slow.

Informative Read
I used this book for my 8th grade literature class. We are reading selections that go with the history timeline. We enjoyed the tales within the book and the historical aspect (although fiction).

We bought this book to go with our homeschool history curriculum. It's interesting and gives a peek into the lives of French Canadians during their early days in Canada.

Fantastic History
Madeleine Vercherres is little known to the English. This book is an exciting introduction to her and a Great read. Page turner.

Not great
Thought it would be better. I'm not sure why, but I had a higher expectation. Not one in 4 students enjoyed it. Complained it was dry. Contemplate Calico Bush instead, it was enjoyed by all.
