I really did not like the book
Most of the materials she recommends are not sold at the Michaels in my community. Overall, I really did not like the book. I recently purchased drawing portraits for the absolute beginner and it is much better! I really like it and the authors are thorough with instruction.

Exporessions
I feel Cindy Wider could have spent more time and effort on faces and expressions than on hair styles.

Cindy is an amazing instructor! After this course
I started the twelve charcoal techniques as an absolute beginner and all I can say is wow, never did I imagine I would be able to achieve these results in such a short time. Cindy is an amazing instructor! After this course, i wanted to learn more from her and that's when I discovered her drawpj course online in which I am currently enrolled and absolutely love it! 5 stars! Lis Ramon

Not afraid of charcoal anymore!
Cindy is a fabulous instructor. Just starting out , but learning so much. I've always been afraid of trying charcoal, thinking it was just too messy. She gives such clear step by step instructions that you can't go wrong!I saw another reviewer say the supplies are hard to find. The supplies can easily be purchased right here at Amazon: The Prismacolor charcoal kit. Cindy has a review at that item to say that it works perfectly for the course. If you enjoy video instruction as well (I learn so much better that way), Udemy has this course, and it includes some video tutorials for some of the units.

This book made me fall in love with charcoal
This book made me fall in love with charcoal! It gives detailed instruction and is easy to follow. I was able to do my first self portrait which I am very happy with! now I have the confidence and skills I need to draw anything I want in charcoal. As I continue practicing with charcoal, I keep coming back to this book for guidance. It is great. Loved it!

Need to buy the online course too
The ad didn't say anything about an online course that accompanies this book. The book itself has basic instruction, but seems to depend on online content as the core. I'm just assuming this because I didn't buy the course and the book is light on content. I would have appreciated a line in the ad telling me that I'll get better results with the course too. Disappointing.
