The Urban Treasure Hunter: A Practical Handbook for Beginners

I Couldn't Put This Book Down
Chaplan writes such an engrossing book, that it's hard to put down. Being in one of the NY city boroughs, I appreciated some urban perspective although the information and tips can apply anywhere. The only drawback however, through no fault of its own, is the recent changes to treasure hunting in city parks. The new restrictions don't allow for a lot of the tips provided and renders some of the advice as no longer do-able. In fact, NYC has managed to pretty much outlaw MDing and treasure hunting without saying so, just from reading their absurd overlapping policies -- such as no metal detecting within 25 feet of a tree's drip line, and no metal detecting on any open sports field. So what's left? Nothing of course. This book was published before these punitive newer rules however, and should you live in an area where bureaucrats don't micromanage one's ability to metal detect, then this is a most excellent book for learning about uncovering all kinds of treasures. The photo section on the different types of arrow heads was top-notch as well.

Written by a Smart Guy
I got this book for my Brother as a gift. He was excited enough about it to call me to share what he learned from it. He had nothing but praise for the author. I read the first chapter myself and can tell this was written by someone with brains. He has a college education in anthropology so applies a lot of his knowledge using a scientific approach to treasure hunting. This is not just some book written by a laymen weekend treasure hunter with a metal detector although most of his writing focuses on the use of a metal detector. He shares a lot of good ideas of where and when to look for treasure and gets you thinking in directions you normally may not think of yourself. His interest and background in cultural anthropology clearly resonates in his writing which makes the reading more interesting than just about finding old coins and gold. This is a good book.

Nice book for the beginner
My husband has had a metal detector for a few years now, but has not really put it to use. I found this book on his wish list (been there for a year) and decided to get it for him for Christmas. He is already making lists for how to search for treasures based on information in the book. This tells me that he is finding it of value.

Very Enjoyable!
This book is very enjoyable...I recently bought a metal detector and was curious about the hobby. The author gives several ideas that I would have never thought about. The book is designed for a city dweller. However, the book offers enough information for someone living in the country to gain insight. I would recommend this book if you're new to the hobby.

Prepare yourself, this will make you a better no matter what the angle you decide to tackle first!
One of the best books I have ever had the pleasure of reading time and time again on the subject of hunting treasure within city limits! Buy it now and feel safe in knowing that Mr. Chaplan certainly knows more than his fair share when it comes to the subject. Now prepare yourself to not be able to put the book down until you've read all the way though it. And then prepare to do it ALL OVER AGAIN!The Urban Treasure Hunter: A Practical Handbook for Beginners

Useful book for beginners
This is a great book for beginners or people who have not yet started in the marvelous hobby of treasure hunting. It really motivates you to just leave everything you are doing and heading out to your nearest park or historical site and start searching. The chapters on how to take care of your finds and places to find history reports on the place you are MD's are also a great idea.My only complain is the word URBAN in the title... I live in one of the biggest cities in the world but I like to go out of the city and search in old farms and arqueological sites. There is not much information on this subject. I just don't see why everything needs to be from NY's perspective in the book without any chapters to old country sites or even other countries (ancient Europe anyone?).Overall if you are starting or about to get starting in treasure hunting this is a great book to begin your new hobby.

Great For The Beginner
I bought this book along with my new metal detector. It is a great read for any beginner. It gave me an introduction to metal detecting. The author made the book interesting and exciting. I would recommend buying this book if you have a general interest in metal detecting and want something fun to read with it.

This book is terrific!
This book is exactly what the title says...lots of info, photos, illustrations, charts, and great hints on where and how to hunt. Well organized and easy to reference. And although I live in a rural area I still found it quite helpful...I don't store many books but this one's a keeper!

one of my favourite metal detecting books
I used to borrow this book from the library. Finally I decided to buy my own copy. I love this book. I find that the author is really daring to go metal detecting in public places such as city parks in NYC. He has found so many neat and valuable artifacts and coins. This book also covers arrow heads, bottles, etc.

OK book.
We are taught that anything can be found anywhere. True, but a lot of tips are not really feasible for many, like digging through houses that are being torn down, etc. Some good tips on using metal detectors though. Not a bad book, but don't expect to become rich with it.
