Fun and Enlightening Story about Frankie
Loved this creative and heartwarming realistic fiction story about Frankie and her friend, Maya. It teaches problem solving skills about friendships and research. What class pet would you get and why?

Love this series!
This series of books is a delight to read to kids and for kids to read on their own. The characters are relatable and real and the stories make you feel good. Frankie is bright and imaginative and it is fun to see how she will solve the challenges she faces.

Frankie Role model
Fun book that introduces lots of vocabulary. My end of 2nd grade daughter who normally struggles to read really got into this and read within a couple days.

School school for grades 2-4
This series opener is a solid choice for students in grades 2-4 who enjoy realistic fiction. Frankie is a third grade student who may not be the strongest reader, but her problem-solving, device-building skills are top-notch...and she employs the scientific method in her design process. When Frankie's class must research suitable class pets, Frankie employs both her not-so-great reading skills and her oh-so-great design skills to argue her case for a pet rat. But her best friend is arguing for a betta fish. As in any school/friend centered book for the target audience, the girls need a little help in resolving their differences and all ends well. Back matter by author Megan Frazer Blakemore includes more information about the design process (basically the scientific method) and a challenge that most readers should have the resources to complete. Extra content notes: The book is free of profanity, violence, and sexual content. Frankie presents as Black and Maya is likely Caucasian.A 2020-2021 Texas Bluebonnet Award nominee!

Fantastic!
4.5 stars. I loved this!! So many things to love about this - healthy boundaries, STEM, a great friendship story, animal information. I loved Frankie and will definitely read more of her stories. I loved how the adults around her help her sort out some of the emotional moments of the story - frustration, disappointment, anger - in healthy ways. And the friendship fracture here is perfect for the audience - none of the drawn out drama of a middle grade or teen novel or any of the more offensive actions that can take place in a fractured friendship story. The girls here withdraw in their anger and have to find a way back to friendship from their hurt feelings. Perfection. Highly recommend. Would be great for a bedtime or class read aloud.
