Hello, The letter and tree are not magnetic. There are several ways this may be used. The tree may be used standing up and the child(ren) find the letter from the pile, and it may be made to climb up (by the child or adult's hand) as you read the story. This also works with the tree lying flat. Finding the letters/numbers is a great part of learning. Children love to hold the letters and numbers since they are a great tactile element for learning, and it is also helpful for kinetic learners. Hope this helps.
