Well Worth It.
Great film record of the daylight bombing campaign. Watch out for the Horsa glider in the background of the shots of the King's car. The 2 figures in front of the glider are S/Sgt H G Harget and his colleague Sgt B Vincent. They had had to make a forced landing at the field on the day of the visit.

A Truly Great Movie
A really great, timeless movie - every young person should be made to see it and see what amazing men their grandfathers were. Inspirational!

Does not live up to the hype
This is a review of the Blu-ray of the restored 1944 documentary. Firstly, the original film was shot on 16mm, not 8mm, as stated by other reviewers. Anyone with a knowledge of film would know that blowing up 8mm to 35mm is just not practical. Standard 8mm would have to be blown up almost 24 times to Academy ratio 35mm, but Standard 16mm would need to be blown up only 4.5 times. The film has long been in need of restoration and, given the hype, I had high hopes of this one. I was sorely disappointed. According to the sleeve notes this version was scanned from original 16mm prints, not however from the original 16mm elements or from the original 35mm negative made from the 16mm elements. The picture quality is very disappointing, little better than previous DVD releases. In fact, in some scenes it is worse and the colour is, in places, particularly bad. Much is made of the fact that the Bu-ray is high definition, but high def of a poor original is still poor. And I could certainly do without the BluRay company logo in the bottom right hand corner. The extras are interesting, but I am not sure that they compensate for the disappointing main film. If you decide to purchase the Blu-ray, get it from Amazon.com in the USA. It is less than half the ridiculous price on Amazon.co.uk, even with postage.

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!
I grew up watching this fantastic film on Betamax, and more recently on Youtube. Even the Betamax version I copied off to my P.C is of a far superior quality to this very poor transfer! It's so bad you can't read the text on the maps, and the sound is very quiet and muffled.See pics for a comparison between the DVD (poorer quality) and youtubeShould you want to watch this, either buy the Blu-Ray of the motion picture Memphis Belle (1990), as apparently this film comes as an extra in far better quality.....or just watch it on youtube!

Beyond Our Ken.
A fascinating propaganda film from those on the right side of the war. William Wyler directs more than efficiently and there is nothing to say but 'my God' and 'how awful'. A very important document though not a 'documentary'; we can do nothing but ask what we would have done in their place..
