How long is the shelf when assembled straight instead of L shaped?

Incorrect, looking at the diagram, if each shelf is 16.9. So less 7.0 for overlapping makes it 16.9 plus almost 9.9 on overlapping bottom shelf,, so about 26.

Does it have to be a corner or could it be straight out?

You can put it straight across or in a corner

Can 2nd shelf be placed on right or left side as we please?

Yes! See the images for the item, they show 2 different ways the shelves can be arranged. Just rotate 2nd shelf to the side you want and tighten the leg.

Does this have to be built with a drill or can I just assemble it?

Easy assembling. No drill needed.
